Editorial Reviews

Review

In 'Persephone Envy,' Nicole Walker writes, 'Thirsting / against your vocal chords could teach me luscious verberations.' And there's my blurb: This is a book of luscious verberations. Of sonic and imaginative exuberance. Of emotional and grammatical restlessness. She has the soul of a mythmaker, the eye of a naturalist, the tongue of a dictionary, the passion of a bee. 'Everything echoes and someone must / have heard the way.' She has heard the way, and we are lucky to follow. ----Bob Hicock

A new poet gives us a new world. The wonderful work in Nicole Walker's This Noisy Egg measures the distance from creation to catastrophe, from earthly 'NATURE in big red capital letters' all the way to the 'sad sack' moon that leaves its 'big whole in the blank sky.' The pun in this phrase marks one of Walker's deepest skills, the power of multiple purposes and many-layered suggestions. Her poems are as haphazard as a list, as rational as an equation, and then, by turns, as purposeful as a parable. 'What a great land of myths we have now,' she writes, yet even this rich promise shudders with the expense of myth-making. Are we human? Are we already history? 'Make room, make room,' she urges, in one crisp, fine, crowded poem after another. ----David Baker

Born of an acute ear that tracks, and invents, alternative logics, Walker's poems never end up where they begin, but instead have the courage to strike out on their own, refusing tidy forms. Her vision similarly overflows, offering us the marvelously unlikely--'I will swear I saw a hummingbird sip out of a rabbit's mouth'--that stops just short of the dismissibly surreal. Instead, This Noisy Egg makes us consider a new world constructed by an intrepid 'I' armed with her own brand of sassy humor. --Cole Swensen
<P>From the broken star-sparkled starling to its ancestor, the pterodactyl; from the child's tongue in a glass of milk to its reflection, the holy mountain covered in snow--the startling bridges between starting point and turning point, the dazzling leaps of imagination and metaphor--all nest comfortably within the pages of Nicole Walker's first collection of poetry. This Noisy Egg explores the chaos and cacophony of chance encounters, curious ruminations, and marvelous mythologies through the inventive lens of a writer who can give the word wings to set a poem into wondrous motion and soaring emotion. This is a fabulous debut! --Rigoberto Gonzãlez --Blurbs

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection July 5, 2010

This Noisy Egg is a seems at first to be a collection of odds and ends of poetry (good poetry might I add) cover a wide variety of topics that don't seem to go together initial. However, upon further review of the works that the common thread is the human experience in its best and worst forms.

I love poetry. Good poetry, like good music, gives you the opportunity to listen and understand the author (composers) point on a "subject" and allows you to interpret through your own life filter the meaning for you as individual. This Noisy Egg allows you that opportunity. Its a incredible collection.
