More About the Author

Emmy Award winning Steve Thomas hosts Renovation Nation, on Planet Green. He celebrated his final year as host of television's most popular home improvement series, This Old House, during the 2002/2003 television series.

He was honored with a 1997-1998 Daytime Emmy Award and nine nominations for "Outstanding Service Show Host."
In between projects, Steve's yen for adventure, which he attributes to his late grandfather, a missionary in the Alaskan Arctic, inspired him to combine his love of fine woodworking with his passion for the sea and sailboats. In 1977, Steve worked as a carpenter on a 75-foot ketch being built in Antibes, France. Over the next few years, he logged many blue-water miles sailing a 43-foot wooden sloop from England to San Francisco via the Panama Canal, Galapagos, Marquesas and Hawaii.

In the early 1980s, Steve journeyed to the remote Micronesian island of Satawal to learn the ancient technique of star path navigation under the master navigator Mau Piailug. Steve's research resulted in the critically acclaimed book The Last Navigator published in 1987. The next year Steve returned with a film crew to shoot a documentary of the same title for the PBS series Adventure. It was in 1989, in between research trips to the Alaskan Arctic for a second Adventure book and film, when Steve received a call from the Adventure series publicist, who also worked for This Old House. The show's producers were conducting a national search for a new host, and the rest is history.

4.0 out of 5 stars informative as well as picturesque, June 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: This Old House Bathrooms: A Guide to Design and Renovation (Paperback)
Steve Thomas knows his audience and has put together a really satisfying book. He not only covers the basics, but offers helpful advice on a wide variety of amenities for modern bathrooms with a historic feel. A great selection of pictures rounds out the book nicely, offering great examples and new design ideas for the homeowner looking to renovate. Highly recommended for beginner to intermediate renovators who are looking for design ideas and a general scope for their project.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Ideas And Illustrations For A Bathroom Remodel, March 10, 2010
This review is from: This Old House Bathrooms: A Guide to Design and Renovation (Paperback)
"This Old House Bathrooms" is a good introductory book for conceptualizing and planning a bathroom remodeling project. I have recently remodeled two of the bathrooms in my house, and used this book mostly as a source of ideas, as the photographs and text are clear and well thought out. I appreciated the ability of Steve Thomas to draw inspiration from older timeless designs while incorporating modern conveniences.

The book is fairly basic and will likely not get a self-remodeler through their project or provide much specific help with specifications or detailed layout, so if you are going to do it yourself you will likely need supplemental sources. I like the book, and I used several of the ideas from the book during my projects. I think this is a great resource and good place to start, but expect that you may need additional books or information from sales people, contractors, manufacturers, or installers to execute your project.
