This is a great teaching tool,
This review is from: This Old Man-- (Books with Holes) (Paperback)
This is a terriffic book for use in the music classroom, and at home. As a book that can be either sung or read, it is versatile. It's large size and colorful illustrations draw kids attention. I have personally found it to be very effective with my kindergarten through third grade students. I highly reccommend it to anyone looking for a good book for younger kids that can be sung or read! I highly suggest Pam Adams books.

My 2-year-year old learned how to count to 10 reading this!,

My 2-year-old loves to sing the song along with me, and loves to hold this sturdy book. The illustrations are eye-catching and hold his interest until we finish the song. The rhythm of the tune helped him learn more complex word patters like "came rolling home." It is printed in bright colors, on thick paper, and can withstand some toddler handling. This book is similar to the other books illustrating children's folk tunes, but this is by far my son's favorite!

I bought the book to read to my two year old grandson. It is too busy! The pictures don't relate to the text. For instance: This old man he played two. He played nick nack on my shoe. In the picture there is a pirate with one leg a sword and a gun, two puffins, two killer whales and two seagulls. There really isn't a shoe unless you consider the boot on the one legged pirate. The pages get busier and busier as it goes. The picture pages stop at 6 instead of going all the way to ten. On the page with six it had addition problems with cut out circles that fill a whole page the pictures are very small on the opposite page. They have verses 7 through 10 on the back page and all of the pictures to go with it, but all very small. Much to busy for a young child. Perhaps better for a child in Kindergarten or first grade when the addition can be part of the learning.

My 12-month-old son absolutely loves this book. He pulls it down from his bookshelf whenever he is playing. He loves the colorful pictures and cut-out holes. He loves the song so much that now it helps calm him down when he is tired and fussy. I should also point out that I have had this book since I was a child, and I absolutely loved it as well. It's kind of random and weird, but it was published in the 70's. I think it gives the book character.
