3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting release..., July 29, 2004
This review is from: This Pen Is a Weapon (Audio CD)
The GHOST'S "The Pen is a Weapon" may remind some of the days when the NEW YORK DOLLS and IGGY POP ruled the world. Outside of that comparison, it was difficult to acertain where they were headed musically. Their rowdy and supremely experimental sound would warrant a cult following by those fans who prefer a cerebreal experince in music. The album by itself was neither direct punk, hardcore or post hardcore. It was more a combination of all those mentioned plus an alternative outer shell that consisted of influcenes of SONIC YOUTH and maybe even THE UNION UNDERGROUND. It wasn't as directionless as some may perceive but with so much going on, it was hard to pin down what their main purpose was. Then again, that could be the point behind their music in the frist place. Regardless, the overall sound was pushy but not aggressive and delicate but not unbreakable. They drew a thin line in between and went with it in this offering. One thing is for sure though, you will have to check them out and decide for yourself on whether or not you want to be a part of it.
