Book Description

6 and up1 and up
To comfort children and adults everywhere, eighteen top picture book artists have each illustrated a poem for this magnificent keepsake volume.

In September 2001, New York poetry anthologist Georgia Heard was asked to compile a collection of "poems of comfort" for schoolchildren in lower Manhattan. Soon afterward, Candlewick Press editors learned of the project and, believing that people everywhere could benefit from such a collection, approached a number of well-known artists to ask if they would be interested in participating. Within weeks, no fewer than eighteen artists had agreed to volunteer their talents to illustrate one poem each. The result is this unprecedented volume of life-affirming verse that is as richly diverse as it is powerful, as beautiful as it is full of heart.

From Emily Dickinson’s "Hope is the thing with feathers" to Langston Hughes’s "Hold on to dreams," from Walt Whitman to Georgia Heard herself, here is an outstanding selection of poets and poems, matched by a stellar array of artists whose collective work on these pages is truly spectacular.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1 Up-In memory of the September 11th tragedy, this book was compiled initially to offer hope and comfort to children who witnessed the event firsthand, but has far broader application, speaking to all people, young and old, who suffer trauma. Eighteen poems, by contemporary and 19th-century poets, deal with loss, fear, and grief, and touch on feelings deep within, reminding readers that goodness and love prevail, after all, and that there is enduring strength in the constancy of nature. Work by 18 well-known children's book illustrators such as William Steig, Petra Mathers, Chris Raschka, and Elisa Kleven reflects each artist's unique style and complement the poems. A multicultural dimension to the words and pictures gives this title universal application, as life throughout the world is celebrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing, January 6, 2003

This review is from: This Place I Know: Poems of Comfort (Hardcover)
A former teacher gave this book to me recently as a gift of comfort-- my mom died a few months ago of cancer. At first I was skeptical- how could a book written for young children who witnessed 9/11 help me deal with my situation? But then I opened it and started reading. I was extremely moved. Ms. Heard has done an incredible job of putting together some very high-quality poems and finding the right people to illustrate them (the pictures are also beautiful). The best part for me is that the book includes poems which look at greif from all angles: from words about crying and despair to lines about the fact that there is hope and not everything is lost. I would recommend this book highly to ANYONE dealing with any type of major loss/trauma, or anyone who simply enjoys good poetry and illustration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfort & Hope, December 14, 2002
This review is from: This Place I Know: Poems of Comfort (Hardcover)
Though 9/11 events were the inspiration for this book, it can be cherished by anyone who has experienced a set-back or loss. I strongly recommend "This Place I Know" as a sympathy gift or as a resource for someone who is hurting.
