The second of West's 'Cousin Rosamund' trilogy. Written as a stand-alone novel, although even better if you read its prequel ('The Fountain overflows') first.
Continuing the lives of the Aubrey family after the disappearance of their father; Mary and Rose are now at music college; brother Richard Quin is planning to go to university; disliked elder sister Cordelia is starting a new career. But the First World War is looming...
Probably the best fiction I've ever read, West can paint with words so that you feel you're there. The account of an awkward dinner party with family friend Mr Morpurgo and his hostile wife is supreme. And I love her description of self-righteous Cordelia on the eve of her wedding:
'Her new manner...she was still meek, but her meekness was pretentious. Though she was a lamb, it was one which had got itself embroidered on a church banner.'
Exquisitely written, I can't recommend it enough.

"This Real Night" by Rebecca West is a worthy sequel to "The Fountain Overflows." It may not be the masterpiece of its predecessor, but I am glad that I read it and will definitely read the third volume, "Cousin Rosamond." Although I suppose it could stand on its own as a novel, it really is meant to be read as part of the trilogy. It has the same great literary style and penetration of the family and the society just before WWI. Some paragraphs about inconsequential matters, often food, are remarkable in the manner they reveal character, setting and even the history of the times.

I strongly recommend "This Real Night."

Normally, the second volume of a trilogy is the weakest, but This Real Night could stand alone, though it continues the story of The Fountain Overflows and sets up the third volume, Cousin Rosamund. There is plenty of darkness, as in the other two volumes, but also thoroughly-satisfactory triumphs, like Uncle Len taking on the barroom bully who is out to wreck his pub (the incident which also reveals the depth of Uncle Len's past). There is also plenty of West's rather black humor. We saw the childhood of the Aubreys in The Fountain Overflows; now they are adolescents, learning and developing and growing up like people we actually know rather than fictional creatures.

Is book two ever as good as book one? This one almost is but there seemed to be less depth in the protagonist's inner life (now that she's grown up) and the ending is very sad.

This is without doubt the most boring book I've ever read. It goes on and on and never seems to have any direction. Maybe I'm missing something but to me it seems like pages and pages about nothing. I'm not a quitter and will force myself to finish it but all I can say positively about this book is that it is better than a sleeping pill. This first book in the series was a little better and I thought this might be an improvement but I was wrong. I won't be bothering with the third in the series. My time is too valuable.
