5.0 out of 5 stars the best punk band you've never heard of, October 24, 2004
This review is from: Is This Real (Audio CD)
the wipers are like black flag with a strong velvet underground influence. this album in particular is beyond description. it is unfortunate that nobody but the the seattle punk scene (nirvana, mudhoney, melvins, etc.) really knew who these guys were. (p.s. neil young IS into punk rock. rust never sleeps has two songs dedicated to the sex pistols).

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to this, July 1, 2000

Horse Snakes (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Is This Real (Audio CD)
Two weeks ago a friend convinced me to pick up this CD, and from the minute I put it on I was sold. For the next week I couldn't stop listening to it. Every time I put it on there was still something else to notice and discover. First of all, one can't help but notice that they were doing things WAY ahead of their time. And then there is Greg Sage's guitar playing which is incredible. The drummer and bass player also do an incredible job keeping the songs intact and sounding great. For some reason it reminds me of early Cure, when they were still a trio. The late 70's must have been a great time to make music cause there were still so many barriers to break. Well you can tell that these boys were very inspired. Yep, they are one of my newest favorite bands, along with The Dils and Dead Moon. Now if only someone would re-release the Neo Boys LP, Crumbling Myths.

5.0 out of 5 stars The art of catching a tune, May 14, 2004
This review is from: Is This Real (Audio CD)
The Wipers sound like if Neil Young was into punk rock.
Great guitar work, brilliant song-writing, groovy, trippy, underground sounding.
It's easy to hear how this band had effected bands like Nirvana, The Melvins (whom both had coverd The Wipers) and sure countless others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sub Pop = Greed, March 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Is This Real (Audio CD)
This is one of the greatest rock records of all time that influenced "grunge" so heavily that if this hadn't ever been released there never would have been a Nirvana, a Mudhoney, a Soundgarden, a Green River, etc. I can honestly say that this is punk without feeling fake about it. The difference between this record and records by the afformentioned bands is that this album is by far more interesting and original, came out a good 8-10 years prior and you can hear the difference in a second once you get what's going on which shouldn't take much. Don't spend your money on this release if it's on >>Sub Poop since they didn't even ask Greg Sage if they could re-release it. Buy the box set that is on Zeno, Greg's label. The man actually backs up what he says rather than what he thinks people might want to hear so that he can be "indie."

5.0 out of 5 stars Look but don't touch., October 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Is This Real (Audio CD)
One great thing about Nirvana's success was the fact that some sadly neglected records got re-issued, like this one. Slapping the three extra songs from the "Alien Boy" single on the end only adds to the magnificence of this record... echoey guitar and double-bass grinding, madness lurking behind the edges of Sage's vocals and lyrics. People who think they know what "rock" is should spend some time with this record. If only Sub Pop would get around to re-issuing "Youth of America," the second, equally impressive LP... (NOTE TO MUSIC WORLD: Just because Kurt's dead, that doesn't mean bands he liked [Wipers, Vaselines, Meat Puppets, et al.] are no longer worthy of respect and public distribution.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as "Youth of America" but very good anyway, July 2, 2000
This review is from: Is This Real (Audio CD)
This is by far one of the better Wipers albums. Second only to Youth of America which is now out of print. If you don't own a Wipers album and like the sounds of early punk rock BUY THIS ALBUM. Highly influential and catchy tracks like "Telepathic Love". Lots of songs about alienation and unrequisited love; should make for a good soundtrack for a movie like "the river's edge"

BTW (for wipers afficiandos) "Alien Boy" was later recast as "When your an Alien" on some later album. (I'd have to check my vinyl -can't quite remember the album's title.)

5.0 out of 5 stars In my opinion one of the greatest indie records ever made, March 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Is This Real (Audio CD)
Greg sage is one of the greatest songwriters around today. It's just too sad that few people in the U.S. know who he is.This is probably the best example of his older recordings.I recommend it very highly for anybody interested in listening to a cross between Jimi Hendrix,The Sex Pistols,Black Flag and Aerosmith. That sounds like a rather odd combo but you have to hear it to truly appreciate it.After all we are talking about a man whose bands' tribute album featured Nirvana,Hole,Thurston moore and Poison Idea.I know this isn't saying a whole lot ,but this is one of the greatest records originally put out in the eighties. If you don't believe me BUY IT!Also highly recommended albums by this artist are, Best Of,silver sail and The Herd.
