5.0 out of 5 stars And another one... April 16, 2013
Format:Audio CD
They've done it again. Georgia Warhorse, the band's last album, completely renewed my faith in this band...and this album has strengthened that faith. The brass section is still there and perfectly mixed with that soulful organ, roots rockin' guitar, and of course, JJ's voice...which has the ability to be rough as sandpaper, but smooth as ice at the same time.

This album is almost like an exponentialized version of Georgia Warhorse. You've got the deeper tracks with "This River" and "The Ballad of Larry Webb" (love the 12-string here, similar to King Hummingbird). You've also got the fun, upbeat funk/blues rhythms that make you wanna clap and sing with "99 Shades of Crazy", "Your Lady, She's Shady", and "Write a Letter". Add in a little Motown with "Tame a Wild One" and a couple of beach songs with "Florabama" and "Standing on the Edge" (Standing on the Edge even has a little Otis Redding charm to it), and you've got an album that has the ability to appeal to almost every ear the notes pass.

Again, it's hard to really go wrong with this band. This album is like a country buffet - no matter your taste, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot licks funky grooves and soulful lyrics May 9, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
JJ Grey and his band Mofro manage to take new and retro sounds and blend them into a gumbo mix of southern soul, funk, blues and R&B with hints of rock, Motown and gospel poured together with a large dash of genius and a generous helping of sincerity which seems to run through everything they have released so far. This stuff is special. Buy the CD and if you're lucky enough go see the band live!

5.0 out of 5 stars "This River".....If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It April 16, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is the 7th release by JJ grey and his first studio album since 2010′s acclaimed Georgia Warhorse. I love all of their albums. This man has personality and oozes confidence especially at live concerts. His deep raspy voice has its usual seductive edge to it but the music is slightly different than past offerings.

"Half of the ten tracks are crunchy up tempo numbers that flex their funky muscles. The rest are balanced between well-articulated soul tunes, a rock number, and back-porch ballads."

As proven by his previous albums, Grey is a meticulous storyteller. "Many of the new songs," says Grey, "are about being your own worst enemy, and about normal folks pushing themselves over the edge."

This is cold-blooded swamp funk and sly Memphis soul at its best, 10 great tunes that will definitely keep you engaged. For "This River", Grey brought Mofro into the studio and cut most of the tracks live. "It adds so much more to the dynamic of a recording. It's so different when you get to play off each other rather than overdub each track," says Grey.

I read...
"The songs on This River are tighter and more deftly written than on previous offerings, but the more immediate, in-the-moment-of-creation production and incendiary performances keep things from getting slick."

Members
JJ Grey ...vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards
Art Edmaiston ...saxophone
Dennis Marion ...trumpet
Anthony Cole ...drums
Andrew Trube ...guitar
Anthony Farrell ...organ
Todd Smallie...bass

"Grey's lyrics and slice-of-life scenarios are filled with honest detail, helping to bring his emotionally complex characters to life in songs like Somebody Else, 99 Shades of Crazy, The Ballad of Larry Webb and This River.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new album! April 18, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
At first I was a little put off by this album. After a couple listens I as hooked. Great addition to the catalog. Stand out tracks for me are somebody else, tame a wild one, ballad of Larry Webb, standing on the edge, and 99 shades of crazy. The rest are great also but might take more time to be one classics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered. September 14, 2013

This is my first JJ Grey lp. If his other offerings are this good, I'll be glad to start a small collection. The melding of funk, blues @ soul is just what I need sometimes when, well you know the feeling. I have to give the sonics a 4@1/2 stars but the mucic is 5. The lp sounds like analog. A blast from the past in the present!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock the way it should be August 7, 2013

Every once and a while music will speak to your soul. JJ Grey and Mofro have a way of sucking you in and blowing away what can you had conceived as 'new' music. The musical talents are forefront, and the replayability of every track on this album is high. Every single person I've exposed to JJ Grey & MoFro have walked away thinking 2 things 1) This is great *unenhanced* straight up rock and roll and 2) Who was that I need more of that music. I can't wait to hear more of JJ Grey & MoFro in future releases and hopefully catch their live performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good....not great
I am a huge JJ fan but this one just doesn't really "do it" for me. It's well done and a good record but if you compare it to the other albums it falls flat. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty good
Like 99 Shades of Crazy however I wasn't as impressed by the rest of The River. A number of the tracks seemed forced.
JJ's earlier releases were more impressive. Read more

This band has a good sounds but the song writing is weak. This is the second JJ Grey album I have bought and I really want to like it but the lyrics are distractingly bad.
