I bought this book for my son before our trip to Italy, in which we spent a week in Rome. My son just turned 5 before our trip and I homeschool. We read this book and looked at the beautiful pictures before going. It was a wonderful book! After reading the book together, he looked forward to seeing the Coleseum and throwing the coin in the Trevi Fountain and eating some gelato. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning on visiting Rome with children between the ages of 4-8. Prepares and excites child for what they will see. Then afterward is a good reminder of their vacation. My son will still pull out his 'This is Rome' book!

What a lovely book! How have I missed it all these years? I gave it to my daughter, 20, as a memento of our trip to Rome. It captures the spirit and sights of Rome better than anything else I've seen. It might work as a runup to a trip also, or just a wonderful book to dream on for kids and adults. The illustrations are sixties sublime!

Exclamations come to mind: beautiful design and drawings, comprehensive and to the point guide! And this goes for all his city guides Paris, Rome, Venice and Hong Kong. You might argue it is a bit old fashioned, but I think you are confusing it with "it s one of the Classics". And when something is called a Classic, it is timeless and a Must-Have! Trust me, it is worth your while and money!

Purchased this book for my granddaughter (6) to read about two weeks before her mom and I left on a 2-week vacation to Italy. We had bought her a map, also, of Italy and she followed our journey as we Skyped her nightly. :)

But, she loved this book. She read of all the places we were going and asked us questions about them. She would hold up her book at night when we were Skyping and point to the things we'd seen.

This book is just beautiful, both the pictures and the writing. I love how old-fashioned it is. It reminds me so much of my time in Rome! I would recommend it to anyone who loves Italy.

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i would definitely say this entry has some of the more elegant images present in sasek's books.

and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.

i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either rome, or simply in wonderful illustration.

Sasek wrote a series of these books for the world's great cities, and they are all charming. I find that with a younger child, you may just want to look at the pictures and add some of your own narration as the text is wordy and intended for an older (school aged?) child, but it is nonetheless charming. It would be a great series of books to collect for a child, and certainly adults can also appreciate these vintage books with the travel commentary and history and anecdotes about Rome!

I LOOOOOVE this series of books. Written long ago but with updated information, these books are a great addition to your collection. Although written as children's books, they are also great for coffee tables. Buy them all!! Then travel to the places.

Rome is an absolutely beautiful city and this a great book in the Sasek series. It's great for kids and adults who have visited countries or are going to visit them or just to have in your library. Highly recommended. See the real thing if you can!

Bought it for my niece for christmas...she loves this series of books!!! It was on her christmas list. They remember where she has been and were she hope togo !!!
