5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing, May 3, 2005
This review is from: In This Room (Audio CD)
While "Painting on Glass" was their first move away from metal, "In This Room" features the total escape from that field and the focus on a more experimental edge moving into a more jazzy type of atmospheric music. As always, The 3rd and the Mortal provide all around great songs while each track is different from each other in style. The first track "Stream" is an experimental track with piano and electric guitar effects. The same implies for the tracks "Harvest" and "Sleep", two of the best songs on this album, powered by the amazing vocals by Ann-Mari Edvarsen. It's great to see that she hasn't lost any of the strength she had on "Painting on Glass", and proves that rather well especially on the track "Did You" where she screams like crazy! The songs "Monody" and "A Touch Of..." are small instrumentals, rather ambient and some of the best I have ever heard. The drums and the bass are on a somewhat jazzy rhythm while the guitars and keyboards form a nice atmosphere, together with Ann-Mari's chants. Other jazz influences can be heard on the tracks "So Pure" and "Sophisticated Vampires", some of the more experimental songs of this album. Unfortunately, Ann-Mari Edvarsen left the band shortly after this release as did Kari Rueslatten earlier. Nevertheless, I'll just end this by saying this is one of my favorite albums ever and is highly recommended. Proceed with caution though as some of the tracks here are very experimental and might set you off !

3.0 out of 5 stars heavy and light at the same time, June 13, 2000

3rd and the mortal has an excellent style for you who's tired of the same thing over and over. You can find heavy guitars (there are 3 guitars in the band) in contrast with a beautiful female voice, always in a slow pulsation as the song goes by. This album is not the best one, it sounds like they're not as good as they used to be. Although you can find some good emotional tunes - such as Harvest, So Pure and Hollow - try to listen to an older album as well, like Tears Laid in Earth. The trip through their music is always a pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning atmospherics, great brooding creativity, November 16, 2004
By
This review is from: In This Room (Audio CD)
Cannot underestimate this album. Usually atmospherics mean a replacement for songwriting, but that's NOT the case here. Intense, satisfying, unlike their other output but none the worse for it. Ann-Mari goes from plaintive but assured singing to emotive shrieking... simply stunning. Part prog, part metal, part fusion, part ambient. They then took a nearly five year break, leaving us all to wonder if it could be topped.
