Amazon.com Review

Here's a flat-out classic. In 1962, Czech author-illustrator Miroslav Sasek created This Is San Francisco, another installment of his series of children's travel guides (This Is Paris, This Is London, This Is New York). With his usual distinctive and charming style, Sasek tours the sights around the City by the Bay, including Lombard Street, the cable cars, Fishermen's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinatown. This 2003 reissue edition also includes a number of annotations about how certain locales have changed since the book was published. There's a good chance that anyone who grew up in or near San Francisco will remember this book fondly. Everyone else has a joyous discovery ahead. --David Horiuchi

I have the original of this book, from 1950, and grew up loving it. I have been reading that stained, dog-eared old book to my 5-year old daughter and she just loves it! Soooooo, I thought I would re-order this so-called "re-issue" of the book, and looked forward to its arrival.

Today I received the "reprint", and much to my disgust, over 1/3 of the stories are omitted, including "Mutiny" (on of the best in the book!!) "Three Little Paddles" "Marooned" "Sailor's Hornpipe" "The Big Fish" "Sailor Yarn" "The Wicked, Wicked Pirate" (one of the best!! in the original) "Discovery" "Becalmed" "What Will You Be Billy Boy?" "Sea Shanty" "Seventeen Nephews" and "The Very Small Sailor"

No doubt some of these great stories have been censored because some shmuck of an editor judged them not politically correct enough (though I find not one of them offensive in any way), but others seem to have been expunged for absolutely no apparent reason! Now, I regret buying this phoney censored copy! It leaves out so many great stories and terrific artwork. It's not half as good as the original. And I suppose that since most people no longer have the original they have nothing to compare it to! Well I do!

I read this book to my class of third graders today, and they got a kick out of it. The illustrations are very cool and "retro," and it's fun to update the kids as to how the city has changed over the years. I found the text to be a bit stilted, but other than that, it's great, and definitely worth having in one's library.

I was first given this book as a child by my mother. I love it just as much now as I did back then. Sasek does San Francisco absolute justice with the way he captured the city with his beautiful retro artwork and commentary about each area. If you're from San Francisco you know exactly what he's talking about and get such a wonderful, familiar feeling when looking at the book. If you're not from San Francisco, this book will give you a very accurate taste of our charming city.

Fantastic pictures!

Great stories and poems!

My brother had this book when I was growing up (I was born in '68, himself in '64). I was carried away by the pictures and for so many years recalled the feeling they left with me...some bright and cheery, some dark and a bit ominous. It filled my imagination with tales of pirates, mermaids, ships and sailors. I found my brothers old copy about ten years back and couldn't find a new copy to get him (or an old copy). I am glad to have found this book available again. I bought it for his daughter...

...His kid sister sure had many an enjoyable afternoon imaging herself on a ship on a distant sea and I'm sure she will too!

As a preschool teacher in San Francisco, This is San Francisco had my students so excited that they couldn't stop relating to the story. It took me three days to finish the book since the children wanted to relay their experiences visiting the various sights. A few places no longer exist, but it is still a great book to use as a historical reference. And if you are planning to visit San Francisco, I would take a minute to skim through this book as it has all the places you would want to explore within its pages. By the way, the illustrations are absolutely charming.

My father read this book to me from the time I was 2 or 3 years old. There was a story I loved about a sailor with 17 nephews and a niece. He brought his niece a pug dog all the way from China. That story was not in this edition and I'm wondering why. Other than that, my favorite story not in the collection, I'm still very glad to have it. The illustrations bring up powerful childhood memories and I love it.

We love this classic! Its an outstanding book that has lovely "retro" feeling illustrations of all the major attractions in San Francisco. The author does a wonderful job depicting San Francisco scenes and capturing the feel of the city. There are lots of people & places to explore, and the details are fantastic.

We didn't have any problems with the print quailty of our copy-- looks fantastic!
