On the first day of school, the teacher gathers her students into a circle to share their wishes for the coming year. Some are negative (“I won’t be a vegetable in our school play”), some rosy (“I’ll look good in my school picture”), and some perhaps overly optimistic (“We’ll have SKATEBOARD DAY”), but as a group, they reflect a great many facets of the elementary-school experience. The text concludes with the teacher’s wish to “get to know each one of you,” which falls a bit flat. The final, wordless double-page spread, with happy children holding crayon pictures emblematic of their wishes, creates a more satisfying ending for this picture book. And, in the classroom, it could lead straight into the year’s first art project. The short text leaves plenty of space for Andriani to work in, and she uses it imaginatively, creating upbeat and sometimes comical ink-and-wash illustrations. A good discussion starter for the beginning of the school year. Grades K-2. --Carolyn Phelan

This was a question I often asked myself.
In 1992, I decided to head down a new highway.
I left my lovely job in education and became a children's book author.
Did I miss the children, teacher friends, Blue Cross and Blue Shield? You bet!
But I wrote every day ( well almost), collected reams of rejections, and kept sending out manuscripts
In August of 94, the first contract call came.
Now 12 books later, the days flash by with writing, researching, revising, submitting, rejections (Yes, published authors still get them), email, school visits, conference presentations, and book signings.
My husband Earl encourages, edits, advises, takes pictures, helps with research , updates my website which he designed,and prints out maps to schools and bookstores.
I love meeting my readers. And I look forward to hearing from you.

Great School Starter,

This is the perfect book for any youngster starting a new school year. It speaks directly to kids and their fears about school. Each kiddo tells what they wish for the new year. Some are funny - a water fountain that dispenses chocolate! Most are rather telling and even poignant - a hope to remember homework, not lose things in your desk, and a hope to make friends. My personal favorite- I hope we get at least one snow day!
The illustrations are bright and cartoony and add just the right note of whimsy. This would be a great discussion starter to read on the first day of class for anyone from Kindergarten to grade 2. It's great for parents and educators to remember the concerns that kids have at the start of a new year, and this book really seems to sum it up perfectly. A great effort.
