Book Description

June 5, 1996
As the spokesperson for the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, Hanan Mikhail-Ashrawi has become the most recognized and most articulate voice of their struggle. The world turns to her to make sense of the often conflicting attempts at peace in the Middle East as much for her clarity and vision as for her actions and experience.

When the intifada began, Hanan Mikhail-Ashrawi was at the front lines, trying to reason with the Israeli soldiers and to articulate the feelings of an occupied, and troubled, nation; when peace talks were initiated, she brought the human element into the increasingly complex diplomatic meetings; and when Arafat and Rabin shook hands on the White House lawn, she had worked out the last-minute details that finally made it possible.

Now, in a revealing and important account, Ashrawi tells of her own struggles, as a Christian Arab woman in a Muslim, male-dominated world, torn between motherhood and the demands of her cause, and as a pivotal peacemaker in the most monumental negotiations of our lifetime. She offers an inside view of Mideast diplomacy, Arafat and the PLO hierarchy, and the thinking of the Palestinians, and she shares the emotional complexities of her everyday and extraordinary life. The daughter of a physician, a university professor herself -- and a wife and mother of two young daughters -- she could have found ways to avoid most of the hardship of the occupation, but instead she chose to be part of her people's struggle. In the midst of the heaviest fighting, when the two sides were locked in a fatal embrace, Ashrawi learned and drew great strength from her family and her intense friendships with both Palestinian and Israeli women, and quietly helped to lay the foundation for peace.

In her tireless efforts, she understood, by instinct and trial and error, when to follow diplomatic channels and when to take the back door, when to behave and when to break the rules. At the negotiating table she has pierced the iciest veneers with her keen intellect and fiery concern for human rights, and at international conferences, from Madrid to Washington, she has taken the diplomatic community and the media by storm. Still, in her every word, it is clear that her commitment is to the human -- not the political -- elements of nation-building.

Writing in the language of her heart, Hanan Mikhail-Ashrawi voices the most reasoned understanding of the situation in the Middle East, of the difficult road traveled, and of the perhaps more difficult road ahead.

This former PLO spokeswoman gives her perspective on the Israel-Arab peace process.

From Library Journal

Ashrawi, a Christian Palestinian woman from a prominent family and a political activist who has been a spokesperson for the Palestinian delegation in the on-going peace talks with Israel, provides a rare insight not only into the diplomacy involved but also into her ethnic community. This autobiographical approach is extremely well characterized. Ashrawi delves into the attitudes of many of the Palestinian political elites, examining their cultural heritage and how it has affected their behavior. Of course, she also provides an intimate detailing of the intricate diplomatic process by which the Palestinian delegation treated its demands dealing with the PLO, several Arab states, and the United States. The reader gets a firm feel for the delicacy of multilateral diplomatic talks and the pressure that can be brought to bear by major and more powerful political bodies on groups with no recognized government. This work is essential to the understanding of the current phase of the Arab-Israeli conflict and is required reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, October 7, 2002
By
Anda (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
Dr. Ashrawi's account of her childhood experiences and events that are sprinkled throughout the book brought tears to my eyes. Her descriptions of the beautiful Palestinian countryside and land paint vivid images. The narrative is incredibly eloquent and the touching style brings a human element to the sufferings and tragedies of the Palestinian people during the occupation.
Her fact-based accounts of the peace negotiations with the Israeli and American governments are presented with a straight-forward attitude that defy contradiction. This is a book that demands a sequel, especially in light of the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000 and the recent tragic events and conditions suffered by the brave and courageous Palestinian people. It is a book that provides the reader with an insider's experience of history making. It is an invitation by Dr. Ashrawi to walk with her through the corridors of Middle East diplomacy. She is an incredible role model to women everywhere and in the Middle East in particular. She is a well-educated mother, wife, policy maker and creator of history, and above all, the love she has in her heart for her land and countrymen outshines everything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!, April 4, 2001
By
Karen (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
An amazing book for anyone, especially eye opening for those who are unfamiliar with the Palestinian struggle. It is a clear picture of the remarkable struggles the Palestinian people have had to endure under occupation. It is incredibly painful to read some of the harsh brutality the Palestinians have had to live through, but extremely accurate. I applaud Hanan's efforts in writing a book that must have dredged up so many painful memories. Highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Backgrounder, November 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: This Side of Peace: A Personal Account (Paperback)
I found this book to be excellent because it provides a good overview the Palestinian-Israeli problem from the point of view of a person living there.

It is disappointing that Ms. Ashrawi does not replace Arafat.
