This Side of Eden is surely one of the best books to be released this year. With a plot that is anything but ordinary and predictable, I was enthralled from start to finish. Its creative unfolding of events matched with real and tangible characters makes for a story that inspires and changes its readers. Its author, Derrick St. James, shows great promise and individuality with his latest novel. When so much of modern fiction is filled with frivolity and repetition, St. James is a breadth of fresh air and a return to the genius of true creativity and literature. His writing is full of genuine, powerful emotion which resonates in readers and pulls at our heart strings. More than a book, this novel is an experience not to be forgotten.

Honestly at first, I thought the main character was slightly pathetic, it bothered me how he was so wrapped up in his wife, and I felt that he didn't give enough attention to his little daughter. But as the book continued I started to really enjoy it! I like the journey I was taken on, and I could really relate to the 'do anything to help my sweet baby' mentality.
The ending left me in shock as it helped define the whole rest of the book. It wasn't what i wanted, but that is how life can be sometimes. It did make me hug my family a little tighter and it has been a good reminder of what the priorities should be.
It was well written and thought out and I look forward to other books by him!!!

Wonderful mix of love, pain and hope, with just enough imagery to keep you captivated. The "dialogue" between father and two-year old Lizzie is brilliant.
