Jessica Simpson's Defining Album,
By "stephanielepiarz" (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In This Skin (Audio CD)
"In This Skin" is Jessica's album! She wrote 9 of the 11 songs on it, and they are all from the heart. Jessica has continued to mature with each album, but this one show exactly how far she's come. She shows just what her beautiful voice is capable of, and every single song is sung with tremendous emotion. She found her own sound and voice, and unlike many artists today, did not produce a "trendy" sounding CD.Song by song: 1)SWEETEST SIN (9.5/10): The first single off the album, and it is sexy and smoldering. Jessica's breathy vocals create very intense mental images. 2)WITH YOU (9/10): This song is a light, upbeat song talking about how being truly loved for who you are is the most liberating thing in the world. 3)MY WAY HOME (9/10): This song has a great downbeat and slinkyness to it. The melody is very enticing. 4)I HAVE LOVED YOU (10/10): I love this song--the melody, the vocals, it's just a beautiful song that was made for Jessica's voice. 5)FORBIDDEN FRUIT (8.5/10): Probably the most "pop-y" song, but kind of has an old school Paula Abdul vibe, not trying too hard to be hip. You can get into the beat of this one! 6)EVERYDAY SEE YOU (9/10): A sweet, beautiful song that makes you forget all your problems and just relax for 3 minutes. Very soothing 7)UNDERNEATH (9.5/10): A wonderful, powerful song that describes love at it's most passionate, and every bit of that passion flows through Jessica's voice. 8)YOU DON'T HAVE TO LET GO (11/10!!): The best song on the album. Jessica wrote this song for her father, and it is the most touching, poignant, amazing song I've heard in a long time. It actually brought tears to my eyes. It shows what an amazing person she is to have this much gratitude towards her father for making her the person she is today. Her voice is spectacular here. If this song doesn't at least give you chills, then I give up! 9)LOVING YOU (9.5/10): My favorite up-tempo song on the album. Has a great groove. Another incredibly sexy and sultry song. 10)IN THIS SKIN (10/10): This is probably the most revealing song on the album. Jessica tells about her insecurities, but it is very motivating in that it emphasizes being comfortable with yourself. A very touching and uplifting song. 11)BE (10/10): The best "love" song in my opinion, on the CD. It talks about hope and happiness and what love really feels like. Jessica bares her soul and we see her vulnerabilities and her passion for life, love and family. She has truly found the "skin" she is comfortable in!

Her voice is not materialized. She's got a smooth voice than any guy would kill to be sung to with. I've been a fan since she first hit the music scene. Jessica is one of the best musical talents out there, and she deserves every bit of fame she has. I can't wait for the next one.

At the dead heat of Jess,Britney,Avril and others, she could be on top. After I heard her song on the radio, I'm like "I must have this CD!" but M.O.M. says no. But people, this is one thing to shout about! She has what it takes, and YES! She is smarter than you may think, and she's got talent! This CD is great for parties and to just listen to,she just doesn't think before she says something. "With you" is one song you'll want to listen to,that's a bilboard chart song!"Sweetest sin" is also one. I give it 5 stars, listen to it, I have a good feelingg you'll like or even love it!

This is such an awesome CD. Only prob is that there are too few songs, we need more than just 11! So get the Collecter's Edition (14 songs) instead. Here is the list of the songs and how I rated them: 1)SWEETEST SIN- 9/10 Beautiful and Romantic 2)WITH YOU- 10/10 I love it, even tho it gets overplayed on the radio 3)MY WAY HOME- 10/10 One of my fave songs on the album. I can totally relate to it 4)I HAVE LOVED YOU- 10/10 My 2nd fave song on the album 5)FORBIDDEN FRUIT- 10/10 It just sounds good 6)EVERYDAY SEE YOU-9.5/10 Really good, takes some time getting used to. I love when she sings "you are my sunshine" at the very end. 7)UNDERNEATH- 11/10 Omg! This is my fave song on the CD. Its so pretty 8)YOU DONT HAVE TO LET GO- 8/10 Not my fave but its good. Its a little too slow for me tho 9)LOVING YOU- 5/10- Her voice is so strange... 10)IN THIS SKIN- 9.5/10 Great message 11)BE- 10/10- its about nNick and Jessica's future. Its really good! I love jessica. she has a natural, beautiful voice and is so down to earth. I was hoping her cd would be like her 2nd one, but i understand that she is growing up and needed to get out of the "britney pop"(only w/out britney) type of music. the cd was a little too slow for me, but i love listening to it when im sleepy!so soothing!1-sweetest sin: pretty song and all, but i don't like the lyrics-thats between her and her hubby! 2-with you: boring- kind of a filler song 3-my way home:ok song 4-i have loved you: my favorite song! so beautiful! i wish this was her next single! 5-forbidden fruit:umm...nice beat... 6-everyday see you:ok...nothing special 7-underneath- my 2nd favorite song! 8-you don't have to let go: no wait, this is my 2nd favorite song! 9-loving you: i could picture this one being on the radio soon. 10-in this skin:nice lyrics. everyone has insecurities and its ok! 11-be:soothing song. i think this cd is worth the money, because sometimes you just need a nice slow soothing cd!

You're better off shedding this "Skin",
By Forest Law (Lakewood, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In This Skin (Audio CD)
Let's face it, Jessica Simpson is a singer with absolutely nothing of any relevance to offer. From the synthetic melodies to the trite grade-school lyrics and Simpson's overwrought caterwauling, her music is pure product - sadly, her continued success (along with her equally dreadful peers, Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera) represents the apparent triumph of commerce over art. You're not going to hear anything here that hasn't already been done a million times before - and better (although with this genre, that's not saying much). The secret to Simpson's success? Why, it had absolutely nothing to do with crafting an album of epic proportions that would make even the strictest skeptic raise his eyebrow? Of course not! It had to do with marrying another third-tier pop star (Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees) and broadcasting their life together on television! Why America has fallen head over heels for these irritating, self-absorbed prima donnas is anybody's guess - Lachey is an embarrassment to men everywhere and Simpson is an uncouth, spoiled mama's girl. Not only are they hard to identify with, but their attitudes make it hard to stomach them, let alone like them. Now, let's review In This Skin - it's unlistenable dreck and only appealing if you think Jennifer Lopez's "Dear Ben" was a great song, as the whole album is Simpson's nauseating love letter to Lachey. "Sweetest Sin"'s imagery transforms the deeply religious Simpson into a sultry seductress, all in the name of marketability - I'm not buying it for a second. "With You" goes through many dumb incongruous cliches (including "Wish I could save the world / Like I was Super Girl") before she gets to the chorus - where she says there's nothing quite like "being with you", rendering the rest of the song pointless. It doesn't get any better from there: In "My Way Home" she sings "I'm the lover of your soul / Deep inside this man that I know", the treacly and grammatically incorrect "Everyday See You" ("I got the sun / I got the moon / I got someone I can talk to / 'Cause I get to everyday see you") and the ridiculously vain title track, where she repeats the phrase "I am beautiful in this skin" more times than you'll ever want to hear. All this over the tired song-factory melodies typical of a teen-pop and Simpson's many attempts to cover every note on the musical scale in a single breath - this, my friends, does not constitute a good singer. In summary: A lackluster effort from an incredibly overrated performer, In This Skin wouldn't have received a fraction of its publicity without Jessica Simpson's trivial reality show - any performer associated with MTV is guaranteed maximum exposure, and this proves it. I recommend that you spend your money on something other than this tired collection of pop cheese.

What all the negativity about? Great CD,
By A Customer
This review is from: In This Skin [Collector's Edition] (Audio CD)
I think I am confused about all the negative reviews. Is it just that these reviewers bought the CD hoping for some pop -danceable music as normally associated with Jessica and in turn got a mellow CD about love songs? A Jessica hater who just dont like her-like all the other people that ripped up the reviewers of Britney's new CD which is also very good too. Either way - there is alot of talent in this girl. She CAN sing almost all of the new "pop diva's- embarrasingly under any table" and she is also writing quite a bit of her own songs. I think this CD is great. Its a CD about Love, there is no mistaking that, and in some reviewers defense there is no real diversity here- but the songs are well sung, production is good, and they dont seem like cheesy pop. If you want more upbeat type music- stick with Britney. Edgier- go with Christina. I was excited to finally hear Jessica on the radio again and still climbing the charts. The DVD is cute- however it really could have been longer, with more scene's and even a few video's would have been nice. Overall I do think- in my own opinion here, that the CD is great, more grown up and shows some class- which a few certain singers her age completely lack. Go Jessica

Jessica is doing just fine!,

It's really amazing to me when I read the reviews of people who don't like Jessica Simpson yet they listen to samples of her new CD only to take out their hatred and frustration on the amazon.com website in the form of a review. If you don't like Jessica, or pop music to begin with, don't waste our time with hateful comments! Find a CD from an artist you like, then review it...your comments would be more helpful and less childish!Let's face it, Jessica IS a good singer. If you compare her to Britney Spears, she can sing rings around the self-proclaimed 'Pop Princess'...who of late seems to really have lost her direction (and some would say she's lost her mind, too.) I still think Christina Aguilera is THE voice to compare to, but Jessica is real, down to earth, funny, and sticks to singing the stuff she knows and feels comfortable with. She does not try to stray away from the style that has made her famous. She has a dedicated fan base who could, and should, look to her as more of a role model in pop music much more so than Britney and Xtina, who have now gotten into pure shock value to get attention. She is grounded in her family, her show, her marriage and her beliefs and it shows. She is great on power ballads and radio-friendly pop. In this new CD, she puts a fresh new twist on both 'Angel' and 'Take My Breath Away'... can you imagine if Britney had tried to remake these singles? What a breathy, whiny mess we would have ended up with. My point being: don't listen if you don't like the artist and the style of music. And don't be jealous just because Jessica (and Nick) are enjoying some fame just like everyone else! Nick and Jessica, drop me a note anytime, I think hanging out with you guys would be a lot more fun anyday than hanging out with your 'competition'! |
