This is the PERFECT Christmas book - I bought two dozen copies to give away as Christmas gifts. The traditional Christmas Story is told in a simple yet engaging manner. The artwork however makes the story come alive - it's amazing. When one of my grandchildren (who happens to be half African American) saw the picture of Baby Jesus she said "Look Grammy, Baby Jesus is the same color as me - light brown!" and indeed he was. I especially loved the angels who appeared to the shepherds: Miss Bettoli had each dressed in a glorious bright colored flowered robe. When I saw that picture my first reaction was, "I knew my mother (since deceased) wasn't wearing a boring white robe in heaven - she wouldn't have worn bland colors when she was alive so I'm sure she wouldn't do it in heaven"! Can't rave enough about this book.

This is a captivating telling of the Christmas story for youngsters. But for me, the illustrations are what make this book stand out from others. Kids will be drawn to the gorgeous colors and the rendering of all the characters - human and animal - so that they're immediately likable and comforting. There's so much rich detail that every page encourages the creation of its own little story beyond the brief text. And there's something there for adults, too. We big people can appreciate these illustrations as artwork, admiring and enjoying the rendering and composition. I'd like to think that kids with a creative eye could learn something about art as well as experience this lyrical rendition of the Nativity, which makes it a twofer in my book.

This is a lovely book with good rhyme. The colors are soothing and the pictures are interesting. Both portray the version of the classic story wherein the beasts comfort and sooth the baby Jesus.

Four Stars. Very Good Read-aloud. The rhythm of the poem will appeal to children, especially if they are already familiar with 'This is the House that Jack Built'. The artwork is very nice and shows people of different ethnic backgrounds. The wisemen, for example, are Asian, African and middle eastern.

I was looking for a book of the Christmas story for my 2 1/2 year old son, since all we seem to own are things like the Grinch, the Night Before Christmas, etc. (Not that there is anything wrong with those!) We checked this out of the library and we both love it enough that I had to buy a copy. He asks me to read it again and again, and I adore the gorgeous illustrations and age-appropriate telling of the story. Perfect gift, too, for Christmas or a baptism, etc.

This was our first book gift to our new granddaughter. The simple,rhythmic text captures the ear of the infant as well as the attention of the toddler. It is soothing as a bedtime book, and a nice quiet time story to calm the excitement of Christmas Eve or Day while reinforcing the true reason for the celebration.

I purchased this from my 3 year olds preschool Scholastic book order in November 2008 (paperback). By Christmas, the book was covered in tape as we tried to piece it back together because it is so well loved. It has been a constant companion and she can recite most of the book. She takes it to bed most nights and has 3 year old panic attacks if her book is not within reach. It is stunningly beautiful and cherished at our house. This will likely be given to all of our little friends as gifts this Christmas and we will also be purchasing our daughter a replacement copy.

This is the sweetest Christmas book you'll find anywhere. Its easy rhymes and poignant pictures will enchant you and your child. My three-year-old son has already memorized parts of it and will read it along with me. It warms my heart to hear him recite the story of Jesus' birth. I have given this book as baby gifts several times, and the parents have all loved the book as much as I have.

This is the perfect book to share the story of the birth of Jesus with my precious grandchild. As every new birth for every family is a miraculous and divine event, I love how the illustrator, Delana Bettoli, captures the magic of this universal mystery in her attention to every detail. The aura of Love and Wonder radiates throughout, in the Mother, Father and Child, in the sweetness of the animals, the Heavenly Blue morning glories, the magnificent angelic cloud formations... All families will embrace this lovely book as the artist has presented a wide range of multi-ethnic characters.

I was looking for a book for a child that told the story of the Nativity. The pictures in this book are lovely, and I also like the way it rhymes. A beginning reader would have fun reading this book aloud because of the rhyming. A child would also enjoy having the story read to him/her. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The words and story flow beautifully. The illustrations are brilliant and inviting. I've been reading it to my child each night during Christmas, for the past 3 years (since age 2). I'm so glad I found it. It's my favorite to other children as a Christmas present.
