A beautiful album, somewhere between sixties jazz and alt-folk,
This review is from: This And That (MP3 Download)
I am not usually a fan of singer-songwriters, though I've certainly listened to enough of them. Often they seem maudlin to me, or obvious, or just dull.
Lizzy Parks is a huge exception. She has a beautiful voice - very jazz influenced, which may be one reason I like her so much. Some of her songs have that sixties jazz "Afro Blue" sound - a bit like 2BO4. Others are haunting in a more modern, alt-folk kind of way - think of Ida. All her songs have lyrical and musical depth - there's a lot to hear on repeated listenings. The overall feeling of the record is relaxing, evocative, tuneful and happy. The instrumentation is spare - guitar, sometimes bass, bowed instruments, tabla or some similar drum. There are a few lovely saxophone solos. If you like jazz, folk and the quieter end of alternative music, definitely check out this record. I've played it about a dozen times this week, and I love it.
