Editorial Reviews

Karen Beres and Christopher Hahn, members of the CanAm Piano Duo, have been presenting innovative programs of duet and two-piano repertoire since 2002. They received the silver medal at the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in Boston and a distinguished ranking at the 2009 IBLA Grand Prize competition in Ragusa, Italy. As avid proponents of contemporary music, Beres and Hahn perform a varied repertoire of new works and masterpieces of the 20th century. Karen Beres is on the faculty at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Christopher Hahn serves on the faculty at the University of Montana. The program chosen for this recording includes a world premiere of David Maslanka's This Is The World; Libby Larsen's Gavel Patter based on American auctioneering patter and concludes with Lutoslawski's Paganini Variations in an arrangement for two pianos with added percussion parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning work; stunning recording November 25, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Composer David Maslanka and the CanAm Piano Duo, with assisting artists, have produced a strikingly beautiful new work in "This Is the World" -- described by the composer thusly: "The overall feeling...is one of quiet awe at the nature of our world, both the planet on which we live and the amazing web of life it supports -- not only that but its place, and our place, in the universal web of life, the jeweled 'net of Indra'." What we hear is a substantial 48 minute long, five movement symphonic suite for two pianos and percussion. Unlike a number of Mr Maslanka's symphonies for wind ensemble which IMO tend to run on a bit too long, "This Is the World" seems just right. Symphonic is the operative word, as the composer writes huge washes of sound that the CanAm Piano Duo renders with almost frightening realism, followed by delicate filigrees of pianissimo chords that seem to float in to the sound picture from another dimension. The work is consistently tonal throughout, saturated with gorgeous melodies; and each of the five movements (very much in Maslanka's chosen style) is based on a Chorale melody, although none of these is immediately evident. Mallet percussion and tuned bells, and at a couple of points a tremendous ffff whack on a tam-tam, comprise the overall quite restrained contributions from the two assisting percussionists.

In summary, a brand new work from David Maslanka that I find to be one of his very best. Compelling listening, especially if you're drawn towards a New Age sensibility with real substance and backbone, as "This Is the World" certainly is!
