4.0 out of 5 stars So THIS is Anvil!!!
I originally bought this album because I was moved by the perseverance they showed in "Anvil: The Story of Anvil". Any band that could stick to its guns that long and with that much heart deserved a listen. Once I listened to the album, I realized that I've been missing out on a great band for 30 years! This album displays nothing new, but since most of the new music...

3.0 out of 5 stars How can you not like these guys???
Like many others, I first heard of Anvil via their recent documentary. After seeing it on VH1 the other night, I was moved to actually go out to the store and pick up a copy of "This is Thirteen."

This isn't the kind of metal that I usually listen to (say what you will, I'm more of a KISS, Motley, Van Halen kind of guy), but I kinda dig this album. It's...

Any band that could stick to its guns that long and with that much heart deserved a listen. Once I listened to the album, I realized that I've been missing out on a great band for 30 years! This album displays nothing new, but since most of the new music that is being cranked out is lame at best, that's not a bad thing. (There's a reason that 80's metal is making a comeback of late.) Congrats on a GREAT album, and good luck. Any metal fan should add this to his/her collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars let lips play!!, October 3, 2009

this is exactly what anvil fans want, grown people can and do listen to grown people play. its metal. period. the whole band deserves way more respect than has been given, they were and are as honest and heavy as it gets. SUPPORT ANVIL!!!
update, im not the typical target here, but they got me, in my youth, i liked metal(antrax, slayer, megadeth) but the past ten years ive been listening to jazz and delta blues, after listening to thirteen again, im really impressed, ive been listening to this for about a week, im remembering how much i like metal, i hear alot of motorhead and preist in it. its a great album that needs no apologies, and their story makes it even more fun to hear, lips is probaly the most likeable guy in the world. listen to the samples, and you will hear Metal, good metal, not cheese, not poser, classic metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Anvil Album Ever? I've been part of worse discussions ;), October 8, 2009
This review is from: This Is Thirteen (Audio CD)
I must admit, I was hesitant to get this. Some of Anvil's more recent music hasn't really caught the full attention of my ears. I'll also admit that I'm no expert when it comes to Anvil. But, I've done my share of head-banging to their music; mainly their early 80's stuff. However, I do own just about everything they've released. So, after listening to the clips here, I gave the good old boys another shot with This Is Thirteen (without yet seeing the movie, The Story of Anvil). Anyway, I'd definitely give this 9 out of 10, or 4.5 out of 5; but since someone gave it a 2, I'm rounding up to 5! This is a great album, and definitely lives up to the hype surrounding their new DVD story. At first listen the sound is unmistakably like the Anvil we all know, knew, or should have known. On second listen it gets much, much stronger. I've just gotten through my third listen and it is worthy of many more. Memories of Metal On Metal and Forged In Fire abound, and those old CDs have been dusted off :) If you've ever liked any Anvil music you will surely like this. But, it's very evident that they've put extra efforts into this, especially when compared to some of their more recent stuff. There's a lot of really nice variations and arrangements here. The instruments all work very well together, and on their own, and the vocals are classic. This album may not be the album of the year, but I believe it to be the best Anvil album yet. Keep bringing it boys.

any band lasting 25 years with virtually no support and independent labels gets 2 thumbs up in my book. everyone needs to watch the movie ANVIL-THE STORY OF ANVIL and every fan of MEGADETH,METALLICA, ANTHRAX,AND SLAYER needs to listen to this cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars SERIOUSLY?, October 5, 2009
This review is from: This Is Thirteen (Audio CD)
To those who think Anvil was a waste of talent, you obviously haven't been paying attention. It's not always about being pretty or flashy over polished production to make you sound good. Anvil IS good. Just unlucky. They prove metal is aobut soul as well. You can hear the heart in their music, not just some overexcited wannabes copying everyone else. It's time they got their due.

It's more along the lines of Black Sabbath in terms of the slow, plodding grooves and dark lyrics. If I had one complaint, it would be the production. In the movie, they say that this album is the best sounding album they've made (which makes me wonder what the others must sound like). But I'm digging it. I definitely like Lips' guitar playing and Rob's drumming.

It's nice to see these guys get some recognition. Makes you wonder how many other Anvil's are out there, still plugging away in obscurity.

The band Anvil hit my radar via their movie "Anvil: The Story of Anvil!" A very funny documentary about a heavy metal band who after some success in the early 80's fell out of the limelight. 30 years later a fan, and former teenaged roadie for the band who now has Hollywood clout, looks up his old friends and finds they are still plugging away at their dreams of super stardome. He makes this movie and it is very successful.

I fell in love with this movie because it spoke to me on various levels. First it's damn funny, and the principals, Lipps: lead sing/guitarist and Robbo: drums, are really likeable guys. Second, I could relate to their hardships as I played in rock bands for many years and never got beyond bar bands status. After trying for 20 years to make it, I got married, had a family and gave up on my dreams of fame and fotune. I REALLY wanted to show my support for these guys and bought the album they struggled to record and market in the movie.

I bought the record to support the band, but I really enjoy it. There are many classic tracks on it on the par with Judas Priest or Black Sabbath. My favorites are probably "Feed the Greed", "Big Business" and the bonus track "Thumb Hang", but all the tracks are solid. I'm glad they have dropped the raunchyness their lyrics were known for back in the day, it really opens them up for more main stream recognition, without completely taking away their heavy Metal edge. I'm looking into their back catalog of music now, I have 30 years to catch up on.

After watching the special on That Metal Show my husband really wanted to purchase their album. Once received he couldn't be happier. Not only is it as good as promised but there are even extra tracks he didn't expect. Overall we would have to say that this was worth the money.

Anvil's newest release "This is Thirteen" is another great album, from a horribly underrated band. Highlights included the title track, Bomb's Away, American Refugee, & Thumb Hang, just to name a few. Overall really solid album, great playing from the whole band, diffently worth the purchase.
