American History Enjoyed,

My daughter enjoyed this piece of local history. We do not live far from Jockey Hollow National Park in Morristown, where the Wick house still stands. The Wick home has been preserved beautifully (even tour guides dressed in period clothes are there) and the stables where Tempe housed her horse are still in great shape. I've taken my daughter here for walks many times (as my father took me when I was young) and when I saw this book I knew my little 9 yrs. old reader would enjoy it. It seems to have a nice flow to it and also seems to follow the real history of Tempe Wick. A 12 yr. old girl standing up to the Army during a time of war is a hollywood story and a good piece of American History.

True American Tale to inspire and fascinate.,

I love this story. It is fun to read to my 4 year old and 8 year old loves to read it too. It encourages interest in history for the younger generations. The story is amazing and inspires ingenuity. Standing up for yourself and doing what is right. Tempe is an example of a strong woman even for our own time. I love the local connection since we live close to NJ but anyone from around the world can appreciate the grit and determination this young girl shows. She is a truely inspirational heroine worthy of becoming a hollywood/ Disney movie...hint, hint!!

This book has a very engaging text, and as a result, would make an excellent read-aloud. Tempe Wick is a spunky teen when her farm and pet horse are threatened by soldiers who are restless, hungry, cold, and have not been paid in a very long time. Her ingenuity in hiding her horse and the author's storytelling flair make this a delight.
