5.0 out of 5 stars THIS TIME OF THE YEAR; A Joy of Joys

If you aren't ready for a really good time, you'd better watch out. Steve Tyrell's THIS TIME OF THE YEAR could blow you away. If you are, grab your copy and run--don't walk--to the nearest CD player. Smiling starts here.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a very festive christmas album.
The music on this CD was too fast and too generic for a holiday offering. Instead of showcasing the unique style of Steve Tyrell, it sounded like it could have been anyone's CD with mediocre production values thrown into the mix. This collection definitely missed the mark, in my opinion.

If you aren't ready for a really good time, you'd better watch out. Steve Tyrell's THIS TIME OF THE YEAR could blow you away. If you are, grab your copy and run--don't walk--to the nearest CD player. Smiling starts here.

Here is Steve at his rowdy, bluesy, romantic, joyful, swinging best; opening with a rollicking "Santa Claus is Coming To Town." That "rascal" "Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer" never had so much fun, with trumpeter Terry Clark as Santa and Tyrell`s son Nick and the whole gang joining in. A terrific production. It should come as no great surprise to anyone if "Rudolph, you red-nosed reindeer" becomes the call of the wild this season.

Tyrell's rendition of the title song, Clyde Otis and Brook Benton's gorgeous "This Time of the Year," already getting a lot of air play last Christmas and bound to be even more popular this year, is sure to be evergreen.

Tyrell swings "Let It Snow" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas;" he gets low-down with "Merry Christmas, Baby" and "The Christmas Blues;" he romps joyfully through the snow on "Winter Wonderland" and grabs you by the heartstrings with "What Are You Doing New Year`s" and "I`ll Be Home For Christmas." And he puts the presents under the tree, where they rightfully belong.

Even sometimes-sulky Mel Torme would have to approve Tyrell`s handling of his treasure, "The Christmas Song." And Gene Autry himself must be grinning and tapping his boot at "Here Comes Santa Claus."

As with his two previous albums, A NEW STANDARD and STANDARD TIME, you can count on sparkling arrangements, the most fabulous band, and Steve doing that thing he does with his voice. And the by-now-famous Tyrell smile is evident throughout. You may want to start now and play this album all year.

If Steve Tyrell intends to keep improving with every album he records, in the anticipation inherent in the Christmas season, one can hardly wait to see what he's going to do next. So many standards, so little time. One only hopes he makes dozens of albums and that we all live long enough to hear them.

Merry Christmas, Steve. You sho did treat us nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars COOL, COOL CHRISTMAS..., October 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: This Time of the Year (Audio CD)
Well, I know what I'll have on my CD player this Christmas. This records got it all, some big band, some blues, a little R&B and a few slower tunes to pull on the heartstrings a little bit for the holidays. Is there anything S.T. can't do? His wonderful voice that has become so familiar gives Dean Martin a run for his money on "Christmas Blues," and the title track "This Time of the Year" is so good I want to listen to it no matter what time of the year it is! S.T. is always so good at picking the best of the best songs, so its no suprise that this record brings all the songs you love, plus some that you didnt know you loved yet, but now you do. Now, something new to come along, thats not sappy, just good old Christmas fun and feeling to go along with your Frank Sinatra Christmas & Dino's Christmas that have been on the old record player for about 50 years now. This is that good, but fresh and new and and a combination of songs and styles that only Mr. Tyrell can pull off so beautifully.
This is THE Christmas album to own folks.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this CD! And I was not disappointed one bit! Steve put a totally new sound and feel to these holiday classics! Steve's unique voice combined with the band's expertise sounded magical. It definitely will put anyone in the holiday spirit. It's a must buy! And if you don't have his two other standard CDs - they are a must buy too! Great, great music!

I have run out of words to describe the magic of Steve Tyrell. This album is so great. The arrangements terrific, the musician's blend perfectly and I like the fact that it is a family endeavor. I am so anxious to see the Christmas show at the Catalina B & G with his "Band of Brother's".This album goes to everyone on my Christmas list.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Time Of The Year, December 3, 2005
This review is from: This Time of the Year (Audio CD)
This is one of the nicest treats Christmas is made of. A Christmas CD to listen to and enjoy this time of the year. Steve Tyrell produced and recorded an impressive line-up of Holiday songs with the backed up of his perfectly chosen musicians headed by an ace arranger/guitarist Bob Mann, who also co-produced this album.

One of my top favorites from this collection is "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" It's also one of the best songs composed and written by Frank Loesser, a composer in the category of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter in the sense that they didn't need a songwriting partner to come up with a song.

The charms of "I'll Be Home For Christmas," "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" will leave you wanting for more listens.

The lively and jazzy interpretations of "Winter Wonderland," "Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer," a duet with trumpeter Clark Terry and "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" will make you get up and put your best foot forward and start dancing.

"Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" will bring a smile on your face and will transport you back in time with your most cherished childhood memories.

You'll love this Christmas CD not only for its fabulous repertoire, flawless interpretations and marvelous arrangements but also for its liner notes full of black and white Holiday photos of Steve Tyrell and his family. It's one of my very favorites from my Christmas collection.

Happy Listening and Happy Holidays to one and all!

Finding out about Steve Tyrell through watching the DVD "Father of the Bride" staring Steve Martin, both me & my wife fell in love with his singing. Right away we ordered his CD's "Standard Time" & "A New Standard" from Amazon.com. Both are fun to listen to & with great production showing off Steve's unique singing voice & style (though you can say he is a little bit of this & a little bit of that. I saw comparisons of Tony Bennet, Dr. John, & Tom Watts???). During this Christmas season (2003) we were looking for Christmas standards & therefore bought this CD. This time around Steve Tyrell's normal great production gets in the way; the background music sometimes over takes his singing, or sometimes the jazz loses the main melody. Another problem is that the songs are on the more Commercial side of Christmas missing the "Real Meaning" behind Christmas. I believe only one song deals with the birth of Jesus (though Jesus may of been born around October & December 25 is right after the solstice "the rebirth of light"). The rest of the songs are about Santa Claus or the season in general. Overall the CD is great for a party, background music, or when you want that something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Holiday Hit....... A Lovely Mix, October 30, 2002
This review is from: This Time of the Year (Audio CD)
What a treaure! "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Rudolph" literally had me dancing in my chair and singing out loud - what a groovy hoot! Steve's rendition of "The Christmas Song" is an extra mellow version, providing that touch of meloncholy that makes one long for days gone by.....when we were young. While I usually prefer a slower tempo for the standards, "Let It Snow" and "HaveYourself a Merry Little Christmas," I still enjoyed this uplifting approach. "I'll Be Home For Christmas" brought me back to that dreamy holiday mood and his pensive, "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve," reminds me how good it is to love someone and be loved in return. This CD goes in my "frequently played" stack:)
