Book Description

Being the parent of a child with special needs is a powerful experience and an awesome responsibility. It can bend you or break you, but either way, it will change you.

It becomes a journey that you embark upon with your child. In the beginning, you will learn the true depths of your emotions; in the middle, when you think that your reserve of strength has been depleted, you will learn that you can draw strength from your child; as the journey continues, no matter the amount of your child’s limitations, you will learn that your child is the teacher and that you are the student. The lessons are sometimes subtle but are always profound.

When the tragedy could have been prevented, it adds a whole other dimension to the trip.

I hope all parents read this book! A real source of comfort and hope! ---Patty Reardon -- Family Circle, August 6, 2003

I loved it! ---Susan Nadworny -- MFOFC Organization, August 7, 2003

Should be read by all expectant mothers, and anyone with a severely disabled child. We rate this book four hearts. -- Hearland Review, May 14, 2003

From the Publisher

"In This Together" is a poignant story about a child who suffered a devastating brain injury during birth and the difficult times that resulted in the aftermath. Atkinson tells her personal story from a mother's perspective about her first born child, Jacob, and her journey through the stages of grief. Her torment is compounded by the fact that the damage to her son could have been prevented. Due to an insufficient job done by the medical staff, Jacob suffered severe brain damage that altered his life and the life of his parents forever.

Dawn walks the reader through the pregnancy, birth and life of her son Jacob. We are caught up in a medical tragedy unfolding and the effects it has on Jacob, Dawn and the entire family. Dawn tells it like it is with anger, humor and incredible strength. I highly recommend this book for parents, doctors, nurses, medical students.

until it had been read in it's entirety. This book is absolutely fantastic. It is a "real" look into the every day lives that so many of us are living. I am glad that it is out there for people to read and learn from. So many people do not understand what living with a disabled child is like. Dawn puts it out there just as it is. Great Job Dawn!!!!!

If you believe in miracles, do yourself a favor and read this book. Despite it being 296 pages, I found myself unable to put it down...a literal "page turner". I read the whole thing in two consecutive afternoons. The unbelievably true and inspiring story of Jake's survival and Dawn's perseverance against the "system" will have you rooting for them all the way through the book. You don't need to be a parent to appreciate this journey, but those of you who are (including those with special needs children) will find this an inspirational guide from someone who's lived it first hand. Highly recommended!
