Beth Lisick's characters are hilarious!,
By Bucky Sinister (Oakland CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: This Too Can Be Yours (Paperback)
This Too Can Be Yours is a collection of short stories with first person narratives that will crack you up. Lisick has grown past her first collection, Monkey Girl, into an even better writer.

A Modern Day Dorothy Parker,

This review is from: This Too Can Be Yours (Paperback)
The only problem with Beth's writing is that there isn't nearly enough of it. With clever turns of phrase, laser-accurate (and sometimes scathing) insight, Lisick makes you laugh *and* makes you think. A sardonic savant and master of wit, Lisick is a modern-day Dorothy Parker. (And she's really cute, too).

Beth Lisick's writing is massively hilarious and verrrrry entertaining... you want something deep and meaningful go read War and Peace but if you want to lie down on the sofa and spend a weekend laughing so hard you fall off the sofa then buy this book - she's a great storyteller and turns a phrase like no one else.

This 67-year-old geezer could empathize... I realise she's marketed (or perceived) as a humourist/chronicler like the resplendent Sloane Crosley rather than cutting-edge performance artiste, which her ill-advised new book seems to confirm, alas, but for my money this is way more perceptive than, say, Ray Carver's maunderings - and the angst more real. Forget self-help - back to the existential cliff-edge, girl!
(Not a lot of laughs in Carver either, that I can recall...)

I absolutely loved this collection of short stories--Lisick has a razor-sharp wit--I love seeing the modern world through her eyes. I picked this book up on my way home from work and spent the entire BART ride home laughing out loud. Now off to buy Monkey Girl...

It doesn't take too many pages to figure out that this stuff is largely, if not totally, true. That's when you start to feel amazed at how much Beth Lisick opens herself up to share with us. The writing is clean and urgent. The subjects are unforgettable. How does she do this? Recommended.

Man, I was so looking forward to Lisick writing something other than throw-way-pop detrius this time. Very disappointing considering she's had such a long hiatus since her last work, "Monkey Girl." Which I enjoyed...Pop images, pop culture, pop (...). We're tired of it. Get over it and write something interesting, please. Sure, she's a great performer. But in terms of writing? Let's get something interesting next time. Please! |
