Nice debut for Suptic and crew,
By Dusty Punch (McKinley, WI USA) - See all my reviews

One listen to "This Town's Disaster," and you'll come to the realization that the songwriting talent of the Get Up Kids was equally distributed. Standout tracks include "Lost Without You,""Blue Skies," and "Goodnight to Romance." Suptic's voice is perfectly suited for the refreshingly non-emo sound. There's room to grow, but with the quality of their first album that can only mean good things.

This cd definately tops my list for one of the best cds of the year. This is by far one of the strongest debuts from any band I've heard in a long time.

Fantastic Power POP,

I don't know much about the Get Up Kids or emo music but I love this cd. It is great power pop from start to finish. I caught their show in Brooklyn and they were so great live. I came home and bought the entire cd off of Amazon and I love it! This disc definitely captures excitement of the live show. Don't know what is going on with the dude below but he needs to relax and enjoy this album on its own merits. And by the way, I googled their lyrics and they're great too.

How can you not like this?,
By Ethan "Music Lover" (Michigan) - See all my reviews

The reviewer below just doesn't get it. Blackpool Lights aren't out to change the world, they're just here to make catchy, sing-along rock 'n' roll. And this album has plenty of that. Suptic proves his music isn't just for the "emo" kids anymore on "This Town's Disaster."

It's been a very long time since I've been fully pleased with a new record. This is that record. Every new album I've looked forward to over the past couple of years has disappointed me to some extent. (Some a lot more than others.) This Town's Disaster is the one that was actually far better than I was expecting. It starts off great and just gets better. It's so difficult to pick a favorite track. Each track has me saying "this is my favorite song!" but then the next one comes on and I change my mind, because I like it even more. Everything about this record is strong and it is something that really makes me happy to listen to. I feel like a better person everytime I listen. It's just an excellent record. The live performance is top notch as well. Recommended.
Key tracks: Unlucky, It's Never About What It's About, Empty Tank.

Blackpool Lights Shine On Their Disaster CD,

Blackpool Lights. Good CD cover. Made me think what's inside might have some merit, tho could be cookie cutter. Chocked it into 5 CD player, heard this song, tried to figure out who it could be of the 5 CD's in there. Rocking, strong, good instrumentation, that kind of common vocal that we here everywhere without the waiver or the whinny. It was this song 'Maybe Just Maybe.' Then there were some other tunes that sounded just as good, and I'd say of the 11 songs on the CD about 8 are very good. That is the making of a good CD. The themes are not bland love and la dee dah or hate. Like 'Empty Tank' good melody, beat, sound and the lyrics go:
'We are the ones Who never get noticed We are the ones Who are always shot down We are the ones When nobody would want us around Baby it's a long way down.... It's a long way For running, from nothing When we're just the victims of circumstance You were tired of driving I'd let you sleep Short nap with a long dream Yeah, Yeah, Yeah We'd drive all night On an empty tank Holes in our pockets And all the tapes were blank' Then there's 'Lost Without You' - they need help, lyrics 'I won't get far, stay who you are I need help to get around I'll do what you say, just lead the way Nothing's gonna bring us down The people laugh, I get off track It comes back to us You always said, "To get ahead You gotta leave them all in the dust"' Blue Skies, Crash Sounds, It's Never About What It's About, The Truth About Love are four other very good tunes. Just getting to know it. Always good to discover good new music with a different voice and sound. That's what this is. Not the Beatles, or the Clash or the White Stripes, but very very good 'tis. Blackpool Lights. Do they sound a bit like the All-American Rejects??

Better than most Get Up Kids records,

It's a shame this didn't get more attention or that the band broke up before they could make a follow-up. This record is fabulous power pop - the Get Up Kids should've used more of his great songs. For fans of the last two Replacements records, the Lemonheads, etc.

like a cool glass of champagne!,
This review is from: This Town's Disaster (Dig) (Audio CD)
I have over 2,000 CDs in my collection but I must confess that the new album by Blackpool Lights has won a special place in my cd player. This album is as welcome as a cool glass of champagne on a hot summers day!

Being a Get Up Kid's fan since Four Minute Mile was released, I was sadddend by the break up of the band last summer. I thought I would never hear from Jim and the boys again, but a few days ago I was in FYE and this was on the sale rack. The sticker said "New Project from Get Up Kids frontman..." and so on. I picked this CD up immidiately, and for only 10 bucks, what a purchase. This is nothing less then what I would expect from the frontman of TGUK, and it is solid, emotional rock. That being said, this CD is in no way emo. It's a set of pop/punk/indie/ whatever you want to call( emo's such an overused term these days) it that drags the listener in and doesn't let go. These songs are ridiculously catchy, his voice, as always, flows perfectly with the music. It has a nice summer feel to it, and overall very pleasing. Pick up this CD if you want something new to listen to, to get away from all that garbage that's released every day. You wont be dissapointed. These guys are going to be big soon, so check them out and hopefully they wont get ruined by the mainstream.

This is a solid 3 1/2 star album. I like it, its not knocking down any new walls, but its good music. I'm just giving this 5 stars to offset the needless One Star Review. Just try'n to be fair.
