Better than Wonder Whats Next...and thats saying a lot,
By A2K Fossil "Brad" (amarillo, tx) - See all my reviews
This review is from: This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In (Audio CD)
I bought this CD having not heard one song off of it yet, thinking how much I loved Wonder What's Next and Chevelle, and just thought since its Chevelle it should be worth my money. Well it definitely is. I think its ten times better than Wonder What's Next. They have matured so much in their sound. I noticed on WWN that on some songs it was the main riff that carried them. But on This Type of Thinking, its the riffs, the vocals, the drums, everything that makes every song on here great. So I guess I'll do the ol' rate-song-by-song method here, but to me, that's what is effective to reviews I read...
And I'm not going to rate the songs all close to ten, I'm rating them how they really are. 1. The Clincher - 8/10 - Awesome start to the CD. I was hooked from the first ten seconds. I enjoy the beat of the cymbals with the guitars at the beginning and end. 2. Get Some - 9/10 - This song contains one of the best moments on the album, and that is its bridge. It has the quick riffs of the guitar that Chevelle is known for and the vocals and lyrics sound great. 3. Vitamin R - 8.5/10 - Fortunately I hadn't heard this song before I bought the album so I wasn't tired of it when I first listened to the CD. It is comparable to "The Red" because of the short strums of the guitar during the verses. But when the pre-chorus comes, Pete's high vocals are so beautiful, and the chorus' bursting in sounds very good. 4. Still Running - 8.5/10 - This is the hardest song on the album and has the rock-out ability that "Prove to You" and "Wonder What's Next" had. I would love to watch them play this song live. 5. Breach Birth - 7.5/10 - The only reason I rated it lower is that I'm not real big on the lyrics. "Molds"? But still, the chorus rocks hard and is pretty good. 6. Panic Prone - 8/10 - One of the slowest songs on the album, it stays steady until the bridge, at which the vocals burst into a melodious, long, high note and it speeds up. I enjoy that shift change every time I hear it. 7. Another Know It All - 9/10 - When Pete says "I'll take any...thing thats not bolted down" with such anger, you really get into it. Those aggressive lyrics go well with the aggressive instruments. 8. Tug-O-War - 9.5/10 - Don't judge the song by the title, because I did and I quickly changed my mind. This is my second favorite song on the CD, mainly because of the awesome chorus. 9. To Return - 7/10 - The weakest song, with okay lyrics and more simple vocals and guitars. 10. Emotional Drought - 10/10 - My favorite Chevelle song and one of my most favorite songs ever. The pre-chorus and chorus are so freaking badass that I probably listened to this song 30 times in a row. It has a catchy beginning, good verses, and then that pre-chorus and chorus kicks in...and then is followed by the real hard rocking bridge with screams, guitars, everything. This song has every element. 11. Bend the Bracket - 9/10 - Just like Wonder What's Next, they end the album with a slow song. Although "Bend the Bracket" isn't acoustic like "One Lonely Visitor" is, Pete Loeffler's long, slow vocals sound great. The lyrics in the chorus are captivating: "The war is on, too weak, to move, call it off, sorry, refused..." I am very, very impressed with Chevelle with this new release. I now respect them more, as they have put all the elements together on one extraordinary album. If you liked their previous efforts, you won't be disappointed.

Not quite as good as their last, but still quite good,
This review is from: This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In (Audio CD)
This Type of Thinking(Could Do Us In) is Chevelle's third album coming off of Wonder What's Next, which I found very impressive. With this latest effort, sadly, I don't think Chevelle has outdone itself like I'd had hoped they would. That said, they haven't sunk into mediocrity either. I think Chevelle has lot of talent, and instrumentally speaking, I think This Type of Thinking supersedes Wonder What's Next.
The first track on the album is "The Clincher", which is about...well I'll just let them tell you: "It's about claustrophobia. It's cool to get a song out on the radio that everyone can listen to, but it's about such a dark subject." Some mistook it for a religious song, and it does a good job of tricking those who don't study the lyrics very hard. It's one of the stronger tracks on the album, and gives a great first impression for new listeners. "Get Some", the followup track, matches "The Clincher" and shows off Chevelle's improved instrumentation. Peter sings his lyrics in a very convincing manner, and I found the singing to screaming ratio was well proportioned on this track. It is absolutely fantastic, and Chevelle at their absolute finest. "Vitamin R(Leading Us Along)" is about Ritalin addiction suffered by a friend of the band who was misdiagnosed with ADHD. It's an excellent track. From here, "Still Running"(a lot of screaming on this one), "Breach Birth", and "Panic Prone", are all great tracks. The only songs I didn't particularly care for were "Tug-O-War", "Bend the Bracket"(excruciating) and "Another Know it All". Technically speaking, I noted in my review of Wonder What's Next that the sound quality isn't as clear as it should have been. This is fixed on This Type of Thinking. I think overall this is a good effort from the Loeffler brothers. But sadly they don't reach greater heights coming off of Wonder What's Next. I'd say these two are nearly equal, but I enjoyed their previous effort more. They are reportedly planning to release a new record in the spring of 2007, hopefully they'll have realized their full potential.

I've been a fan since I first dicovered Point # 1 sitting on the shelf in a record store. I loved it but knew that the potential to be better was in there somewhere. Than they released "Wonder Whats Next" which was so beautifully melodic and yet it maintained so much of the aggressively heavy sound from the first album. It was a beautiful mixture of both worlds and it worked perfectly. The album is almost perfectly divided into melodic and heavy sections. The lyrics felt really focused and they accurately captured certains feelings and concepts (such as closure and forfeit.) The third time around is unfortunately playing it really safe, its not that I mind so much that they stick to what they are good at, but they seemed to have lost alot of the melodic intensity of the second album. Gone are the melodies in favor of super heavy riffs that blend far too easily into eachother. The lyrics are pairs of words that have no connection to one another, and are very hard to decipher. They have lost the focus they once had. The ballads are very standard and don't really break any new ground. Don't get me wrong, there are some very choice tracks on this record and if you want heavy, you got it. Hopefully they will be more willing to take more risks with their sound, because todays music is far too concerned with sounding heavy and much less concered with actually creating melodies you can sing along too. In order to last in the industry you have to be willing to take creative risks and be willing to change your sound. This way of creating music, really could do you in.
Peter's voice is the one aspect that has improved with every record. Some may say he sounds like a certain singer from a band about wrenches and screw drivers. This may be hard to understand, but many people have similar singing voices, and Peter holds his own very very well. The only problem is its really hard sometimes to make out what he's saying at times. I don't mean to complain so much, but the gushing reviews need to be a bit more objective. Chevelle is still a great band with alot of still untapped potential. This album is a great listen, but far from being the best album of the year.

It was inetersting to me to read some of the other reviews on this CD, because I also was not overly impressed the first time I listened to this CD except for a couple of the songs. However, after giving it another try I was absolutely hooked. I have both "Wonder What's Next" and "This Type of Thinking..." and they are both highly recommended if you like this type of music (especially through headphones!). I find Chevelle's music to be original and emotional. Dark minor key melodies and thick, vibrant textures make it very worth the purchase musically in my opinion. They are both good musicians and songwriters. They take themselves waaaay too seriously in an "I'm young and full of angst" kind of way, but overall both CDs are highly recommended.

Terrific 'sophomoric' release..,

While Chevelle has 3 albums under their belts, only Wonder What's Next and This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In) were commerically available to airplay and record stores. Wonder What's Next brought much more melody to the table than was available in Point #1, and in their newest album they seem to keep that melody but kick it up a notch with the hard rock. It is a perfect blend of melody and hard guitar riffs and dual-pedalling that distinguish this album from the other bands out there with the same neo-alternative sound.
One listen to this album, and you'll realize it is one of those few albums that you can pick up and listen to all the way through..it is in the sense that this is actually an 'album' and not just a few tracks with filler. Terrific production and song writing throughout the entire CD, I just surely hope that it does not become a radio hit because I like it too much, and radio tends to play the hell out of good music. Damn, what a paradox for bands! All of the songs are worth a listen, if you were a fan of even one of the songs on Wonder What's Next, make sure you pick up this album. *SPECIAL NOTE* - This is the first CD I have bought since the good Napster days, so keep that in mind that I was highly anticipating this CD and did not want to wait for the masses to upload it onto the internet. BUY IT!! IT IS WORTH IT!

Chevelle Rocks, Sony Bites,
By Bryan P (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews

Just got a copy of "This Type of Thinking..." and as expected the album rocked. The major problem is that Sony decided to employ some serious DRM stuff that prevents the CD from being ripped, and may not even play in some CD players. Personally, I _only_ listen to music in MP3 format so I was forced to go illegal and download the entire album via p2p just so I could listen to it. I love Chevelle and want to see them suceed, but until Sony decides to quite selling products that don't even do what they are supposed to, I personally won't be buying anymore Sony/BMG music and encourage others to do the same.

ok, i got Wonder Whats Next and This Kind of Thinking Could Do Us In for christmas...i'll tell you that i listened to the cd once and wasnt all that into it. i listened to Wonder Whats Next until i got sick of it! I decided to give the other one a try again. I gave my full attention to this cd and after hearing it for the 2nd time i fell in love with it! chevelle definitely put just as much effort into this cd as they did their last, if not more. i'll have to say that i am very impressed. No song on this album is bad. this cd has a little of the slow, haunting sounds and the hard, headbanging sounds we're used to hearing from chevelle. They stick to their roots but kick it up a notch. I recommend this cd to anyone who enjoyed Wonder Whats Next, it is really good. if you dont have it, you should get it soon! its worth the money! Trust me!

A return to the Chevelle I loved,
By Lux (All over the US of A) - See all my reviews
This review is from: This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In (Audio CD)
I've been a Chevelle fan since late 1997, before they were signed to Squint records for their amazing debut, Point #1, when I first saw them play in a small coffeehouse-style youth center opening for a Chicago area band called Sheesh. In fact, I have a signed copy of their first EP, which contained early versions of several Point #1 tracks. Obviously, I loved Point #1, since it was a high quality document of the Chevelle I had fallen in love with 2 years prior. I awaited their second album and major label debut Wonder What's Next eagerly, but ended up disappointed. It wasn't the son of Helmet/Quicksand/Filter Chevelle that I remembered. It seemed that they were holding back, playing it safe because they knew that it was their chance to break big.
And they did, but unfortunately at the price of earning them a "Nu-Metal" or "Generrock" labelling. With This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In, the brothers Loeffler have not just gone back to their old sound, but have created a louder, harder, faster, more complex, more intense, more mature and times more beautiful version of the original Chevelle sound. It's almost as if Wonder What's Next existed only as a means to get their foot in the door and TTOTCDUI is their declaration of who they really are as a band. WWN fans may not enjoy this, since it's a much different and more aggressive sound, but fans of Point #1 will love it, and conversely, fans of this album would enjoy checking out Point #1. TTOTCDUI is an album full of energy and passion, an album that channels its influences instead of copying them, and in turn it's one of the best no-nonsense rock albums to come out in recent years, although it's still overshadowed by their incredible debut record. Standout tracks include "Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)"-the first single off the album, "Clincher"-the album's blistering opener and "To Return"-a powerful and beautiful track with a clear Tool influence. This album is a must buy for fans of old Chevelle and bands like Helmet, Quicksand, Filter, A Perfect Circle, Tool and for fans looking for a straight-ahead, no-nonsense hard rock album.

Unbelievable. This type of thinking could do us in is the top album of this millennium, and
Chevelle is THE BEST hard rock band in its prime right now. Stating that they are just another good rock band is a huge understatement. Chevelle leads the way with heart pumping sound and vocals that gives me butterflies when I hear it. They simply took it to another level with this album, and I didn't think that was possible after an impeccable WWN album in 2001. I had such high expectations, but they came through. And I'm tired of Tool fans criticizing Chevelle because they think they sound similar. Tool acquired many of the components of their songs from Korn and Nirvana. Every band should learn from the great things that other bands do, this is how music progresses. Nirvana started the hard rock revolution in 1990 with Teen Spirit. I think Chevelle has incorporated some of Tools wonderful guitar riffs and melody's, but Pete's voice does not sound like Manyard's, why do people keep saying that. They're are both completely unique, and insanely gifted. I have the highest respect for Tool, as their song Lateralus is probably one of the best songs of all time, but Chevelle produces their own unique and amazing sound, not to be confused with Tool. This album included the component that makes Chevelle so special; their ability to change direction in their songs, from soft to hard and slow to fast, all while Pete slams you with his unbelievable voice, similar to songs like Grab Thy Hand. His voice is amazing at any volume, which makes him a special singer. Their versatility and quality among each individual song makes the albums works of art, and delivers special meaning into every second. As promised, this album is harder than both their previous albums, and it is so good. Get Some and The Clincher are the best songs on the CD, with heart racing changing of speeds and sounds in each song. Those two songs rank up there in Chevelle's top 5 ever, with Point #1, Comfortable liar, and Blank Earth. Still running is an amazing remix that left me speechless, an unbelievable improvement from the original song which was included in the punisher album. My Chevelle top 10: Point #1 Comfortable liar Blank Earth Get Some The Clincher Send the Pain below The Red Closure Grab thy hand Vitamin R If your tired of the wimpy sound of punk rock like I am and you want some real hard rock, don't hesitate to purchase this album, it's guaranteed to make you realize how Chevelle is the best band out there.

Wonder What's Next no longer,
By Lyfestyle (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In (Audio CD)
After liking their first effort, Point #1, and thoroughly enjoying Wonder What's Next (their 2002 follow-up) and then hearing their contributions to the Daredevil and Punisher soundtracks, as well as The Clincher on Madden 2005, it's fair to say I was incredibly psyched about their upcoming release. To say that my tremendous expectations were exceeded would be quite the understatement.
The brothers Loeffler have managed to create quite the hard-hitting-yet-melodic album that I expected, yet couldn't possibly have prepared for. It manages the elusive blend of hard rock and melody that eludes so many of today's Nu Metal posers. The qualm that I'm hearing from most reviewers who aren't as enamored as I am, is that all the songs tend to sound the same, which is true to an extent, but I feel that the sound they've managed to create here is so good and so flexible that building an entire album on it is exactly what they should've done. Had they only filled half the CD with the dropped-B tuned hard rock, then you'd have people upset over the fact that only half of the CD "rocks." Using that argument to say the album's not great really isn't valid, as there have been numerous great rock albums that use the same sound in different variations - Tool's Undertow, Helmet's Strap It On, Stone Temple Pilot's Core, even pop-rockers Everclear had their best (and most successful) album with So Much For the Afterglow, which was basically the same song 9 times with different lyrics. During my first few listens to Wonder What's Next, certain aspects of the music really caught me, for example the exploding bass in Comfortable Liar and the overlapping guitar in An Evening With El Diablo, and I find that This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In is rife with such musical exclamation points. From the seemingly endless scream at the 3:10 mark of Emotional Drought to the palm-muted speed strumming in coordination with the bass drum during the second half of Get Some, this disc is without a doubt the most enjoyable Nu Metal album I've heard musically by far, with The Clincher being the best song I've heard in ages. I gave Wonder What's Next five stars because it proved to me that the Nu Metal genre could produce truly good music that wasn't gimmicky or throw-away, and I feel that This Type... is an album superior to Wonder..., therefore giving this album a perfect rating is a no-brainer. I would highly recommend this album for anyone who calls themselves a fan of rock music. The only downside I can think of is that we'll be waiting another 2 years for their next effort. |
