Editorial Reviews

Featured in  "The Best Graphic Novels of 2014", The Guardian.
" Succinct and inexpensive, these short but lovely-looking books explain complicated ideas and histories with wit and great cunning."  Rachel Cooke.

"Ingram's approach embodies Tolstoy's assertion that art is about emotional infectiousness. She tells a living story, at once illuminating and vibrantly human, rather than weaving a static tapestry of facts. The result is a book that's inviting without compromising its intelligence." Maria Popova, Brainpickings

Rae's attention to detail is impressive: artwork helps paint a vivid picture of the artist's surroundings and upbringings, and bring to life personal moments. Rachael Steven, Creative Review

"The books do indeed feel vibrant...Upon opening the book, the reader is able to explore the life and works of Warhol...without being lectured, unveiling the shroud of mystery that surrounds [this] mythical figure." Nara Shin, Cool Hunting.

As an obsessive fan of Andy Warhol and comics, I squealed with glee when I saw a new project that smartly combines the two." Pop Candy, USA Today.

"Eloquent, informative, and amusing." - School Library Journal

While strolling the aisles at the huge Book Expo America conference in New York two weeks ago I spotted the booth for the Laurence King Publishers. The graphically exciting art books caught my eye and I had a chance to meet Mr. King in person (not always the case!). The book that interested me most was this volume on Andy Warhol. When it arrived in the mail I sat down immediately to absorb the information and look at the illustrations. I was duly impressed.

This is apparently the first in a series of “This is …“ books,. The first three volumes (Warhol, Dali and Pollock) have text by British art historian Catherine Ingram. The books are compact – 80 pages each – with 50 color images in each. There are sturdy pasteboard covers holding the contents. About one- third text, one-third repros of the artist’s work and a final third with new illustrations (in the style of a graphic novel), the books (well, based on the Warhol one I got and read) cover the artists life with enough prime info to be able to discuss the artist in conversation, and maybe seek out more info,. The Warhol book has a lengthy Bibliography.

I was familiar with many of the Warhol art that is shown in this volume but the text – each section covering a period in his life ( early schooling, college, his New York and Hollywood periods and his death) – fleshed out some more facts for me. Had I only known that he painted repeating pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s soup cans, I would have felt that I learned a lot from this moderately priced book. It’s a nice way to introduce artists to a younger generation who seek out “graphic novels”.

I can certainly recommend it and am looking forward to some of the other titles in this series and other books from Mr. King’s imprint.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

This is THE book on Warhol to read and possibly retain. A quick read with illustrations of his products and life stages. Well done.
