Comment: This book has already been loved by someone else. It MIGHT have some wear and tear on the edges, have some markings in it, or be an ex-library book. Over-all it is still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

Review

“This is iconic. Another generation of children are enjoying Miroslav Sasek’s classic This Is series of books… Using vibrant color and stylized drawing, Sasek captures the personality and flavor of each city or country in a way that appeals to both children and adults.” ~ohdeedoh

I bought several of these books when traveling in Europe as a souvenir. I have since bought all his books. The drawings are unique and have a vintage feel much like the Madeline books. You will want to keep these on the book shelf for years to come. Your children will cherish them. My only complaint is there aren't more.

as with all of m. sasek's books, this comes with the exceptional illustrations he is famous for. the information is plentiful, but in some cases here, a bit too wordy (or at least wordier than his other books). i could see this entry being a bit too much for some children to sit through, even with the wonderful visuals.

i also found some of the points of interest in the book to be a bit random (old globe theatre information, anyone?). i happen to enjoy random information, so this was a welcome addition for me, if not a bit strange in parts.

and with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.

wonderful book!

I love the books in this series! The DC book is just as fun as all the rest. We enjoyed learning about DC before our family vacation.

This is a fabulous read when planning your child's first trip to DC. It gives children enough detail to get them excited about some of the museums and monuments without boring them. I absolutely recommend using this as an introduction to DC. Since it was written a few decades ago, it won't work as a guide for planning your trip. It gave my 7 year old some perspective about what we will see and why these buildings/monuments are important. The illustrations are terrific!

My wife and I got this book for our daughter just before she went on a short trip to DC. She read the book constantly before leaving on the trip and it held her attention while on the airplane and throughout the trip. It was informative and she became very excited when she would see the sites depicted in the book. My only complaint is that it is too long for a short bedtime read. Otherwise, its great, very informative, and fun for kids to read.
