Book Description

9 and up4 and upThis Is
Like the other Sasek classics, these are facsimile editions of his original books. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, remaining true to his vision more than forty years later and, where applicable, facts have been updated for the twenty-first century, appearing on a "This is . . . Today" page at the back of each book. The stylish, charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek’s witty, playful narrative, make these books a perfect souvenir that will delight both children and their parents, many of whom will remember them from their own childhood. In This is the Way to the Moon, first published in 1963, Sasek rockets readers to Cape Canaveral—the space capital of the world, a science-fiction-turned-fact spot on the Florida coast—with a nostalgic look at the electronic brains that put our man up into space and brought him down again. Also included are the updated statistics about the lunar landing and a mini history of NASA’s space program.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you've not seen the world via M. Sasek's series of children's travel books, here's the perfect excuse to do so...the book is a colorful time capsule from the hip world of Cape Canaveral during the era of "Right Stuff" astronauts." ~Bookpage.com

"Filled with facinating facts, the book is an inimitable introduction to the rise of the American space program, combining lots of details with Sasek's subtle humor." ~Parenthood.com

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the most unique entries in the sasek series!, May 23, 2011

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i would definitely say this entry has some of the more stylized images present in sasek's books. it made me yearn to go back in time, if only to see the country at that time.

and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the space program...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the program WAS as well as the present day differences.

i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either the space program, or simply in wonderful illustration.

Purchased this book for my son who is really into space right now. Living in Florida, we loved reading the history behind the space center. I REALLY love the style of the illustrations- they make the book for me. My son was very interested in all of the cool details given on the different rockets. Great buy.

I have several of the Sasek books that have been reissued, and this is one my favorites. I bought it as a Christmas present for my boyfriend, whose grandfather worked at NASA, and we have had a great time reading it, on our own and to my two nieces. Great illustrations and a charming story, as in all Sasek's books.
