4.0 out of 5 stars Short, detailed explanations of how 35 machines work, September 15, 2007
Many of the machines that we see and use every day are based on simple physical and mechanical principles. In this book, Gardner and illustrator Jeffrey Brown give a simple and effective demonstration of how thirty-five machines work. They are split into the five categories:

*) Light
*) Appliances
*) Around the house
*) Medicine and health
*) Recreation
*) In the future

The machines range from the pacemaker, to the scoreboard in the Houston Astrodome to the Space Shuttle. All explanations are clear, to the point and the illustrations are non-technical in nature. No understanding of industrial drawings and very little knowledge of mechanics are needed. Nearly all reasonably bright high school age children will be capable of understanding them.
