This review is from: This Is What I Signed Up For (Paperback)
This Is What I Signed Up For by Jerald Howard is a fast-paced, drama-filled read that will have you jumping out of your seat because of Howard's eye for detail and great descriptions. Thomas and Darbye are in a monogamous relationship; however, Thomas feels he has to overcome some giant obstacles in order to be the man he wants to be for Darbye. Rejected and dejected Thomas contemplates suicide but is that the answer to the thousand dollar question? Darbye is a hard-working woman who is happy in her relationship but wants to understand why her man seems to be in a constant funk. Sitting with her friend to solve their relationship issues she concludes that he must be cheating. You get what you ask for when you go snooping; finding out what was going on caused Darbye more harm than good. This is What I Signed Up For will have you questioning what is going on in your life at the moment, like can I really handle this and is this what I really wanted to do with my life. Mr. Howard wrote a wonderful story about the obstacles that one must face when in a relationship and wish to move on to the next level; marriage. The characters were so real that I felt their pain, love, lust and desires. The descriptions and scenes are refreshing as well as realistic and I found myself rooting for Thomas to get his act together. Can Darbye accept Thomas for the man he is and not the man she wants him to be? Will Thomas fail the test that Darbye set for him? Can love conquer all or is this marriage doomed before it begins? You decide. Full of action, drama, twists and turns, you will not believe the outcome of This Is What I Signed Up For. I cannot wait for Mr. Howard's next book. I recommend this book to readers of all genres who are able to look outside-of-the-box. Reviewed by: Cheryl Hayes APOOO BookClub

This review is from: This Is What I Signed Up For (Paperback)
Thomas Carson and Darbye Mitchell have decided to live happily ever after together in marital bliss. If only it would be that simple. In Jerald Howard's This Is What I Signed Up For, life comes at Thomas and Darbye head first and takes no prisoners. Thomas has lost his job and cannot figure out a way to tell Darbye. Becoming depressed because he thinks he is a failure, and his behavior has definitely changed. He even considers committing suicide. She can tell something is wrong. Her trust for him becomes questionable and her mind begins to play tricks on her. Of course, she thinks he is cheating. This is where all of the games begin. Darbye turns to her best friend for advice. They devise a plan that is a sure fire way to find out if he is cheating. She does not realize that this is pushing him further away rather than bringing them together. So many obstacles are thrown their way. Can they overcome the lies, deceit, and tests? Or will the pain be unbearable? Howard's writing is so fluid. You can tell that he is a poet. There are lines in the book you have to read over and over. It is just that good. The story is captivating. The scenes are so descriptive, you cannot believe that he made this up. I really felt as though someone was telling me a story of what really happened to them. And to think that a man has captured the female point-of- view like this is refreshing. The inclusion of musical references is amazing. You are singing right along with the characters. The poetry in the back of the book is icing on the cake. They relate to the story and you find yourself drawn right back in. He definitely outdid himself with this one. It is fun, fast-paced and full of drama. Cannot wait for the sequel. He left it to where there HAS to be one. Howard has made me a fan. Thomas Carson is a dreamer but his dreams aren't coming to reality. Ashamed of being a failure in his girlfriend Darbye's eyes, he contemplates suicide, but a phone call saves his life. The love Thomas and Darbye have for each other is passionate and exciting. However, Darbye notices a change in Thomas's behavior and wants to know if he's cheating on her. She enlists the help of her best friend to find out if he's cheating and the outcome may be more than she bargained for. THIS IS WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR by Jerald Howard is a riveting story of love and trust. It also sends a powerful message that faith endures all; whatever is going on in your life, you have to work at it with faith and belief. I enjoyed reading this novel for many reasons. The characterization and pictorial scenes are the essence which give the novel life. Readers will be hypnotized by Howard's rhythmic style of writing. Humorous moments are strategically placed where tension arises and the poetry at the end of the novel are from scenes within. If you're looking for a quick read with drama and humor, I recommend reading this novel. Reviewed by Sharon Lewis of The RAWSISTAZ(tm) Reviewers
