This is Who You Are is a letdown after Light a Match. The lyrics are sappy, the riffs less engaging, and the songs as a whole are lacking something. Where Light a Match showed a blatant disregard for pop sensibilities (and it worked) by switching from soaring melodies to brutal breakdowns, this record tries too hard to be accessible. As a result, there is no vitality. Where Light a Match depicted a band performing dark, grandoise emo tunes, This is Who You Are is a sappy performance of indie rock.

Room for improvement,

I heard the title tune on DirecTV's "Alternative" music channel and liked the song enough to buy the record. Unfortunately, save for a few tunes, the record as a whole disappoints me. The first three songs are, in my opinion, the best on the record and highlight what the band does well. They have an anthemic quality, offer reasonably interesting, tight arrangements, use dynamic changes well and deliver empassioned vocals while avoiding screaming, which to me is cliche. That's especially true of Wide-Eyed and Wasted, where they use the two-guitar setup to present a broad, interesting pallette. On none of the songs are lyrics an asset, though lyrics of the first few tracks are superior to the others. Production values on this record exceed expectations. It sounds pretty good.I get the sense that TBM shot the moon on this recording, but I don't think they quite made it. To get there they'll need to continue to focus on the strengths identified above while working hard to improve their lyrical offerings. On this record I get the sense that TBM has fallen into the trap of believing that the passion with which the words are sung compensates for the shortcomings of those words. It doesn't.

I thought this album was pretty good. "This is who you are" is a beautiful song. I love its message of determination and perseverance. "The seperation" and "Cold hands" were also great tracks but I found the rest of the album kind of bland. "Wide eyed and wasted" showed promise but never got off the ground. Even though this album is lacking, the talent of the band is undeniable. I'm sure fans of Dredg will enjoy this album but I think the best is still to come form Beautiful Mistake. The band just needs to devlope their sound more and they will be a force to be reconed with.

New epic for our dying youth...this IS who we are.,

This review is from: This Is Who You Are (Audio CD)
An absolute epic! Beautifully toned down a bit with the screaming and created a definitive sound that is missing from other emo and punk. Many fans miss the screaming, but now they aren't labeled as a fake screamo band...not like there were. If they wouldn't of grown to this extent, this album would not be the amazing epic it is! A MUST BUY for any emo, screamo, hardcore, or music fan in general. I guess now should be the time to break down the songs. This Is Who You Are - Great opening riff with a chorus that even a nazi could sing to...bad example. What im trying to say is that this song is a great sign-a-long that will be with you forever! Best song on album. Wide-Eyed And Wasted - Secong best song on the album. This song has the best verse and a great lead riff in the chorus. My Reminder - This song is ok, but it has a great sing-a-long chorus! Cold Hearts - The heaviest song probably cause it's the only song with screaming. Definitly good if you really like the older stuff. A Safe Place - Again, an amazing chorus. The Separation - Amazing song, it has so much energy and the guitars are pretty cool. The Great Divorce - This song has probably the second best chorus in the album. Also, pretty powerful lyrics. Walking Wounded - A pretty punkish song with the best lyrics on the whole album. A Freindly Committee - A very fast song with an energenic chorus. Again for someone who likes the older stuff better. Cold Hands - The major epic of the album. Great guitars, AMAZING DRUMS, and good bass. About 7 or 8 minuets long of one of the greatest songs the band has ever written. That's all that needs to be said. BUY THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems to me that every review is the same one from people thinking they know a lot about music, but are just copying everyone elses response. This cd and the last are very similar musically. This is who you are just doesn't have screaming, but that doesn't make it completely different or that the music is going downhill. I like screaming, but I also believe it is a huge crutch. If you would look deeper than the screaming, you will see that they are very similar.

Let me start by saying that Light a Match... is in my top 5 cds of all time. I was pumped to go get this cd, but I regret it. There are like 2 good songs on this cd. And i don't mind in the slightest that there isn't the same amount of screaming here, its just annoying music. if it was well-written and interesting emo, i would've loved it. But this is just stupid. Yes, they changed directions and have a different sound, but that's not an excuse to suck. Funeral for a friend has done it very well. I hope next time is better.

The Beautiful Mistake is a band which stands on the edge of its own climax, but doesn't quite reach it.
I can't deny the absolute tallent these guys carry. They can play with collaborative forces that can be hard to discover today, with all the bands making headway on the radio, slinging sludge as they go. The problem lies not with the tallent, but with their decision to put it in the first five tracks, then in my opinion, use filler the rest of the album. Track 3 and 4 are some of the most astounding exclamations of Emo that I've heard in a long time. I would recommend buying it on the power of track 3 alone, it has become an anthem which reminds me daily of the love I have for my wife. It is a lone epic that would have a fast climb on the charts if it were to get radio play. This is a cd to which some will think deserves five stars, and some believe its a flop, my belief rests in the middle. If only The Beautiful Mistake would believe enough in themselves to go the distance, they would be unstoppable.

I've been a great fan of TBM ever since I bought Light A Match, and to tell the truth i was very dissapointed. Though many of the songs are catchy, well written and some are even great songs, the album as a whole is overdone, yet toned down from Light A Match. The lyrics are pop-like and preachy. Now I do admit there are some good songs, Wide-Eyed and Wasted is one of my favorites as it is somewhat like the stuff from LaM. A Safe Place, The Great Divorce, and Cold Hands are also decent songs however I really cant stand most of the other songs. I was pretty dissapointed that TBM decided to ditch the screamo stuff as that really added to their music. I cannot say who much I love Light a Match and how much Im hoping their next release is more of that style.

Thoroughly Disappointed,
By
This review is from: This Is Who You Are (Audio CD)
This album is such a disappointment after Light a Match. They have lost nearly all their intensity and aggression. There are almost no screams whatsoever on this album. The lyrics are so preachy, sappy, and cliche. I really loved this band and thought their last album was amazing. This album sounds like it should have been released on Drive Thru. The vocal performance is good but the lyrics are bad and the intensity is gone. The musical performance is actually really good, but unfortunately the songs aren't and the album is a step back artistically from their last work. This is what happens when hardcore stops being hardcore and starts being pop.

Good, but no "Light a Match.",

The Beautiful Mistake definitely takes a step back from their first full length "Light a Match, for I Deserve to Burn." "This is Who You Are" just doesn't sound as big, as epic as their first cd. However, it is still agood cd and i'd reccomend it, especially the last song on the cd.
