One of the better collection of letters of a Civil War soldier to his wife. Captain George Squier is articulate and not afraid to let his opinions of other officers and the political situation be frankly stated. Unfortunately we do not have the replies from his wife, Ellen. This is one of the fine Voices of the Civil War Series published for the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War by the University of the Tennessee Press. George Squier served in the 44th Indiana Volunteer Infantry which was part of the Army of the Tennessee. In the interest of full disclosure George Squier is a distant cousin of mine and I thought his photograph in uniform was very good. Robert G. Carroon, Secretary of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee.
