Good, but not great, from a very promising group,

Well, I've had the CD for a few days now and after more than a couple listens, I can say that I'd give this a solid 3 1/2 stars.
The album went back and fourth between just another pop-punk quick listen, and something bigger and greater. Certain songs were reminiscent of Tell All Your Friends or This Time Next Year, two of the best neo-punk albums of all time. At others...it was more like New Found Glory, or Hawthorne Heights, which is to say, not bad, but nothing special either. Overall, I'd recommend buying this album if you can snag it for ten bucks, because hell, it costs that much to go see a movie for 2 hours, and you'll certainly get more entertainment out of this. And maybe...hopefully, if enough people buy the album, Set Your Goals will figure out what it was that made some of the tracks explode with high energy, melodic awesomeness, and give us a masterpiece next time.

Good pop punk,

So I've seen Set Your Goals live enough times and thought it was about time to get a CD. I waited for this one instead of getting Mutiny because this one seemed to have more bite to it from the samples I heard. As far as genre goes, this is definitely in the pop punk category, I don't really know why some consider it hardcore, there's a few moments where they get heavy but it's pretty straight forward hooks and high voices most of the time.
Really there are only 10 songs on this CD, because two and eleven are filler tracks. The good news is, all 10 of them are excellent tracks. At first listen the CD meshes together and is pretty forgettable with few exceptions, which is why I almost passed this CD by, but after a few listens, things start to click and it all makes sense. What makes this CD good is that it's a lot of fun and there's tons of energy, something this band is known for. Even on their political songs like Gaia Bleeds, which hits home with the lyrics, I could picture myself jumping in a crowd to these tunes. The duel vocals are excellent, with a lot of back and forth singing going on. On four tracks we have guest vocalists, Haylie from Paramore, Chad from New Found Glory, and two guys I haven't heard of, but they all do a great job, especially Haylie. Flaws; mixing. Where in the world did the bass go? We have a little bass fill in the first 30 seconds of the opening track and then it disappears into the distortion of the two guitars never to be heard from again. Also, there are some instances where Matt and Jordan seem to step out of the song and get on a soapbox, talking rather than singing about whatever's on their mind. This doesn't usually work and takes away from some of the songs. This is definitely worth picking up, especially if you can find it for 8 bucks like I did. This CD proved three things to me. 1.) Pop and hardcore do have a place together and it makes a new sound that is neither of its original ingredients. 2.) Energetic pop-punk is not dead 3.) Paramore should make some hardcore songs, but of course they never will and we have twelve year old twilight fans to thank for that (grrr... dont' get me started)

Excellent Pop Punk,

I hate reading a review like Nick's that basically says he really likes the CD but then gives it 3 stars. Granted this CD is obviously not breaking any new ground, but it is a stellar listen. This is probably my favorite pop punk band (though who knows what all that title could include for different people). Set Your Goals is just really really good at making hook laden pop punk tunes. Taking it at that there's no way I could rate this less than 5 stars. My favorite track right now is probably Summer Jam, which is a ridiculously fun song that I can't get enough of. Gaia Bleeds and Look Closer are my two other favorites at the moment.
Also another thing about the Nick review, I strongly disagree with the notion that track 2 and 11 are just filler. I think they are an excellent part to the CD that help create a great flow. They are not full songs, but more like introductions to the songs that follow. They did the same thing with a couple tracks on Mutiny! as well and I think it really adds a great deal to the listening experience. Which reminds me that that is one of the big reasons I enjoy this band so much. They really know how to create a CD that fits together very well .
