Who is this guy?,
By
This review is from: This (Audio CD)
Four hours ago I wouldn't of known Will Kimbrough from your cousin. That was before I saw him perform with Rodney Crowell at the Carolina Theatre. From the moment he struck his first chord I was in awe. First off, with just he and Rodney on stage, the guy had a lot of work to do just to pull off harmony vocals, fills, and lead guitar parts. I swear, three talented musicians couldn't have done what this guy did. He was amazing. Mid-show Rodney left the stage to give Will a chance to show his stuff. No one was disappointed. I joined about 50 other folks lined up to buy "This" after the show. By the time I got home I was humming Will Kimbrough tunes. This guy can pen some hooks! I'm looking forward to his next release.

I have been a fan of Will Kimbrough since his days with Will and The Bushmen. He has once again shown his great ability to write song loaded with melody and messages that say something. With all of the junk that is passing as songwriting these days Will still gives us hope for the future. I have had this cd in my player for about a week now and simply love it. Kim Richey also sings backround on many songs. I promise any one who buys this will be pleased they did.

Will Kimbrough - This - a fantastic CD,

I was lucky enough to see Will perform at Davey's Uptown in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 22, 2002. The music was absolutely fantastic! It amazes me that Will does not get more airplay - but I guess that is just a statement about the quality of music today. Will's music blends many different styles (country, blues, rockabilly, etc.) that will appeal to almost anyone. I also enjoy the personal feeling that Will gives to his songs. "Chimayo" is my favorite cut and, to me, worth the price of the whole album. After seeing him live, I have a new appreciation for the guitar. Will was fascinating to watch as he played song after song - his talents are remarkable. All I can say is check this CD out - you will not be disappointed!

Will Kimbrough is the person responsible for me ever picking up a guitar. That was almost 20 years ago and still Will creates music that makes my jaw drop and my heart stop. Why haven't we heard this music on the radio, oh yea, THIS is actually good music.

It seems on radio today, airplay is in direct opposition to amount of talent. The less talent you have, the more you get played. This means that Will Kimbrough will probably never get airplay; too bad, because he's extremely talented. This album runs the gamut of musical styles; there's some good alt-country, some nice bluesy tracks, and even some poppy songs that sound like they were penned by Lennon and McCarthy. I saw Will years ago with Will and The Bushmen, and thought they were highly talented. Time has only made Will better. My only complaint about the album was that it's too short, about 36 minutes. Will, you shoulda done a few more songs!

A few weekends ago my sister and I went to a bar to hear a band we didn't know of. We were totally blown away by the poetic combination of soulful words and moving playing. I don't think anyone has touched on this but Will Kimbrough moves like a man that knows these words he has conquered---he is an honest and humble preformer. His creativity has inspired me--he will do the same to you.

FINALLY, A Solo Album From A True Veteran...,
By
This review is from: This (Audio CD)
THIS may be Will Kimbrough's debut album, but don't be surprised if it sounds like the work of a well-traveled music veteran. Will has actually been around the music scene for quite a while. He cut his teeth fronting two semi-legendary bands -- the Southern pop/rock outfit Will and the Bushmen in the mid to late 80s, and the Bis-quits, who put out a pretty decent album on John Prine's Oh Boy records during their all-too brief career in the early 90s. Since then, Will has spent most of his time as a mercenary guitarist, recording and touring with folks like the great Josh Rouse, Todd Snider, Amy Rigby, and Matthew Ryan. Now, Will has finally gotten around to putting together his very own solo album and we all get to find out just why Will is so well-respected by so many well-respected artists. The songs on THIS reflect Will's vast musical background, ranging from jangly pop (the Byrdsian "Closer To The Ground") to mournful country ("Diamond In A Garbage Can") and pretty much everything in between. Imagine something between Big Star, The Byrds, and Marshall Crenshaw and you'll start to get the picture... Lyrically, Will still has some work to do, but he more than makes up for it with his composition and his guitar work (and I really should say, his lyrics are still far and away better than most songwriters' lyrics today...). All in all, THIS is a tremendous solo debut that all fans of pop and alt-country rock should thoroughly enjoy. And if we're incredibly lucky, Kimbrough will continue to release his own music, whenever he gets a break from hopping around the country playing guitar for all of his friends. Highly recommended!!

I bought this CD because Shelby Lynne picked it in her top 10 for 2000 and now I can't understand why more people didn't pick this one too. The lyrics, the soulful voice, the amazing guitar playing - what more could you want? Get this CD now. You'll be able to listen to it for hours and hours at a time and hear something new each time.

I went to hear Allison Moorer at the Barns at Wolftrap(Virginia) and was floored by her guest guitar player Will Kimbrough. His skill on the guitar is phenomenal and his voice has just the right amount of edge. After hearing one of his songs...(humorous song -something about a gun..)I immediately went to the lobby to buy his cd. Initially disappointed because the only song of his that I was familiar with was not on the cd...I didn't remain so for long. I have been playing this cd over and over in the car ever since...it's great!! My favorite is Goodnight Moon although it's hard to chose just one. I just bought his Gawk cd from his Will and the Bushmen days..can't wait to hear it.

I had the fortune to be exposed to Will Kimbrough through the Rodney Crowell concert in Durango, CO. My husband and I were amazed at his energy and talent. We left the concert with a new CD and played it all the way home. It is always a thrill to discover someone of his talent. Too bad as you say commercial radio only likes the low hanging talent. Our local public radio station KSUT gives him play and that is how I recently learned of his new project coming out "Americanitis". Cannot wait to get it.
