Most of all, I love how he shares his faith and how his relationship with Christ transformed his life and his marriage.

All the stories are here that you might expect from a Gavin MacLeod memoir. More than that though, I was struck by his joy for living and his ability to see the good in any situation. He obviously loves life, loves others and loves his faith. A fascinating read. The world could use more Gavins!

As a former actress who performed briefly with the Words and Music company where Gavin and his second wife Patti met and fell in love, I can't claim to know them well at all -- haven't seen or been in touch with either in more than 40 years -- but I remember very well what good people they were and what pain he was in during "High Button Shoes" when his first marriage was ending. I also remember the strength of love that he and Patti found with each other some time after that. Unlike the reviewer who said he was just happy, happy, happy, I had some sense, when starting to read this book, of some of the challenges he has faced in life and how life experience, maturity, insight and faith have led him and Patti to their present happiness. It was inspiring to read, too, about his emotional reconciliation with his first wife Rootie whom I also knew only slightly but remember as a lovely person.

I found this book fascinating, illuminating and inspiring. He has, indeed, had good fortune in his roles and in his career. But, as he points out in this book, fame and fortune do not insulate one from terrible losses, depression, loneliness and other aspects of being hopelessly human. I liked the honesty of this book and also the generosity of his memories of others. We see enough of books and articles that trash other people and dish the dirt. I like the fact that he sees so much good in others. I was also greatly inspired by his courage in facing some demons, admitting his faults and growing through the emotional highs and lows of his life and career. I'm not usually a big fan of show business memoirs, but this one is well worth reading.

I am not much of an autobiography/biography reader, but since I was a fan of The Love Boat, I decided to request this book for review purposes from Book Sneeze. I actually enjoyed it. I like that Gavin was able to keep his faith, and let it keep him happy and motivated. It's amazing to read about how God helps and touches different people. I have read some reviews of how this book was a bore, but I found it interesting. Not only do you learn about this mans amazing history as an actor, you also find your own faith restored chapter by chapter.

This is the life story of Gavin MacLeod. His story begins with his first performance on stage. He was a preschooler in a family of very modest means. Gavin's Dad passed away when he was only thirteen. He talks about how that affected his life, as well as, his brother's life who is two years younger. His life story traces his acting career from its humble beginnings to becoming a well-known face in America's living rooms.

He was on two long run series: "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Love Boat." These shows brought him much fame, and riches. As "Love Boat" ended, it spawned a multi-decade career for Gavin as a representative for Princess Cruises.
He has been married twice--or three times depending on how you count it--because he married, divorced and remarried his second wife, Patti. He had four children with his first wife, Rootie.

When his mother gravely ill, Gavin prayed to Jesus and said if his mother's life was sparred, Gavin would serve Him for the rest of his life. His mother did survive. Suddenly Gavin was overwhelmed with the notion to call his ex-wife Patti. This was shocking since, he had not communicated with her at all since their divorce.

Unbeknownst to Gavin, Patti had become a born again Christian. She and friends had been praying for a long time for Gavin to become a Christian, and for their marriage to be restored. When Gavin met Patti he knew right away she was different, and he wanted that, too. When he found out it was Christianity, he immediately became a follower of Christ. Later Gavin and Patti remarried.

Gavin states since becoming a Christian, everything has changed for him. Life is better, and marriage is better.

I loved this book!

I literally grew up on The Love Boat. I remember tuning in every Saturday night. My mom was a nurse and worked 2nd shift, so every other Saturday night my Dad and I would have a "date" with the TV for The Love Boat and Fantasy Island (then, in more recent years, Finder of Lost Loves).

This book took me back to those days in my life . . . a simpler time. I enjoyed reading more about Gavin McLeod's early years and how he got his start in show business. But, the stories of his work on The Love Boat - and all the famous people he got to meet and interact with each week on episodes that I remember - was what really caught my attention the most! I commented that I don't know why they haven't yet released seasons of The Love Boat on DVD --- then, we went to Target and there was Season 1 on the shelf! (It shall be mine!)

But, the real treasure of this book is Gavin's sharing of his faith journey. So much goes on behind the scenes - things that we, as the general public often have no clue about. Gavin McLeod faced lots of struggles and hardships; but, in the midst of it all, he found Jesus and committed his life to Him. And he wasn't afraid to let people know and to show it - out loud! After The Love Boat, he went on to host a show called Back on Course with his wife (on TBN). That show ran for 17 years!

During that time, he has consistently served as ambassador for Princess Cruises (lucky guy!)

The work he says he'd like to be remembered for, though, is his most recent film credit - The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry. (If you haven't seen it yet, it's available on Netflix.)

I literally devoured this book! I couldn't put it down! I feel as if I know Gavin now - as a friend, not just as Captain Stubing.
