Review

This Is Your Book is what many modern parents look for in a baby book and have a hard time finding - a journal that isn't overly precious in design or tone, that's affordable and that is fun to use, not a chore.

from OhDeeDoh.com

You've never seen a book like this. It's modern, beautiful, and full of unique prompts about pop culture and what a latte cost when your kid was born - it's a baby book even a dad would love to fill out.

- Jaime Morrison Curtis author of Prudent Advice for my Baby Daughter

This Is Your Book makes things interesting with questions like: 'When you were born... A six-pack of beer cost,  these celebrities were in the headlines, these were some of the musicians your parents liked.' My favorite thing about this baby book is that since it is written by a man, it is very approachable for a dad.

- Jacinda Boneau of Babble

Log important info (such as People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive the year your baby was born) in this one-of-a-kind book by local graphic artist Ryan Maconochie.

It is so unique and I love the attention to detail combined with the simplicity of it.

This is an easy fix, as stick on photo sleeves can be purchased and installed into this book to keep the photos in better shape overtime.

There are also great topics like, how much a Big Mac/gallon of gas/movie ticket/pack of diapers/commercial during the Super Bowl costs.

I like that this book is different from the usual baby books. It has a whole bunch of pages with a lot of different questions.

The first pages are the basic pages you'd see in any baby book and ask you to include pictures of sonograms, pics of the baby at birth, a hand-print and footprint, a family tree, pictures of the aunts/uncles/grandparents/cousins/etc, notes about how you felt before the baby was born, copy of the birth certifiate, a list of alternative names that you had considered for the baby, and so on.

The middle section of pages has a whole slew of random questions from "Current American Iron Chefs" to "The Dow Jones Index" to "Price of a Gallon of Gas". There are also more annoying (to me) questions like asking for the president of a dozen or so different countries. I'll probably end up leaving those pages blank since I don't have patience to search for the answers.

The last bunch of pages are for pictures of the baby at 1 month, 2 months, etc (all the way up to a year) and then some additional blank pages for whatever else you'd want to add.

Note that this book has a page that asks which US State the baby was born in (so if you live outside the US, that could get annoying). It also has a page for the first picture with Santa which annoyed me a bit since I'm Jewish. Other than those two, there was no page that was overly specific to any religion / nationality.

As for the book itself, it's spiral bound, but the spiral is inside a hard-cover book. You can see the spiral binding if you flip the book over, but not from the front. I thing it's well made - it ensures the pages don't get bent at the seams.

One last thing - this book is not very baby-ish at all. It doesn't have a lot of images on the pages and is not too colorful. I was fine with that but others may obviously disagree so i wanted to make sure i noted it here.

What an awesome book! We're expecting a baby in the next few months, and being the sappy person that I am, definitely wanted a baby book to record fun stuff in. My parents didn't keep one for me (and I was even the first child!), which always disappointed me growing up. I would have loved to have known what my first word was or when I took my first steps.

My husband's requirement in a baby book was that it couldn't look too "babyish." He doesn't want a blue book with teddy bears all over it sitting on the shelf. This one has very modern look going on and the spine is nice and place with simple block font, so the husband was pleased. It's also a nice, neutral bright green, great for a boy or a girl.

Inside is a simple spiral binding with fill-in pages. Not a lot of visual "spunk," but that's why I like it. The pages have all the normal topics you would find in a baby book, like a family tree, places to put photos of Aunts/Uncles/Cousins/Siblings/Grandparents/etc., where the baby was born, time/date/weight/length, etc. There are also great topics like, how much a Big Mac/gallon of gas/movie ticket/pack of diapers/commercial during the Super Bowl costs. A listing of who was in the U.S. government at the time, as well as leaders of other countries.

I loved the places to list who the big celebrities were during the year of the child's birth, the spot to list favorite books your child loved, and the sections to place photos from month 1 to month 12.

My only complaint and reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that the pages for photos don't have anything to protect the photos from wear or fading or being ripped out by little hands. I think I would have liked plastic slots for the photos, as in a photo album, just for some protection.

Definitely a modern and quirky alternative to your normal baby book, at a great price. I'm very pleased and can't wait to start filling it in!

Given what else is out there, I understand why people like this book. It's not overly cutesy; it's gender neutral, and it asks you to document some interesting facts about the state of the world during the time that the baby is born. However, to me, the main flaw is that it takes this documentation way too far. There are about 30 pages (easily half the book) to fill out with information completely non-specific to your baby, including things like current rulers of various countries, supreme court justices, prices of various commodities, and the current iron chefs (???). Again, most of these are interesting ideas -- I think documenting the price of say a gallon of gas or a gallon of milk, or 1-2 news anchors and late night talk show hosts the parents watch is a fun idea. But, this book has 4 full pages for prices, and a full page for each current news anchors and talk show hosts. Even some of the baby-specific pages leave some things to be desired. The "family tree" page has a picture of a tree, but no genealogy chart to fill out (you'd need to draw your own).

I received this book from a friend who apologized profusely for the work this book might require from me. I had started another typical baby book and was frustrated that I couldn't fill out most pages because - he was too young (so not a lot of milestones yet), because he doesn't have siblings or cousins, or... - more importantly, I didn't like the typical books and grudgingly filling them out because I'm supposed to. This book is tedious, but the illustrations are great and it's an interesting reflection of our time today. Does my son really care who the President of Italy is? Academy Award Winners? Current cost of gas? Now? No. 20 Years from now? Maybe. At least I would have been interested. Sure, it's easy these days to look on the internet (which is what you have to do to find some of these answers), but there's something nice about incorporating it into one book, which also includes all the "typical" baby book inserts like footprints, birth announcements, etc and pictures that we printed using our little mini photo printer we have NEVER used until our son was born. But that's a whole different review. This book isn't just about the baby - it also allows him to see himself in the context of the bigger world, and I think that's pretty cool.
