James Gunn taught writing at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. This book dates from the fifties and has the fallen empire feel of Asimov's Foundation series. This book is more personal and fraught with a dark and foreboding feeling of decay and isolation. A beautiful woman comes into the Cathedral, the monk on duty, using technology from another age, performs a personalized miracle for her. Before she leaves, she leaves an offering. On the street, the monk, intrigued by her beauty and odd behavior, watches her on the monitors as she is accosted by agents in black, has her feet cut off with an energy weapon and is carried away. The ovoid crystal stone she has left in the offering receptacle is taken by the monk and he becomes a marked man because the stone captures the hearts and minds of anyone who contacts it. He searches desparately for the woman, encountering odd characters of questionable provenance and motives. Join him in his frantic search for the woman, meaning, faith... history.
