Surprised by a Great Read December 19, 2011
By Linda
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I agree with the other commenters. This book took me by surprise. I read the entire thing over the weekend, finding it hard to put it down. The compact style keep the movement of thought and deed moving at an engaging speed. After finishing the book, I immediately looked for more books from this author. Without reservation, I recommend this book.

It is with regret that I have just finished reading This Is How by MJ Hyland. From the first sentence, I was transfixed. The language was spare yet loaded with imagery. The main character, Patrick, is complex and completely intriguing. In real life, you might despise this person, but in Hyland's fiction, he is almost lovable. At the very least, you can empathise with him and what he goes through. Prison, sex, a seaside village, murder...these themes have a new meaning for me now.

Haunting and Beautiful July 24, 2011
Format:Paperback
Hyland's third novel is her best yet: a tragic human story told in controlled, spare language. There is a depth of understanding here of human psychology that is all too rare in modern fiction. Nothing in This Is How is hysterical; everything - its style, its plot, its characters - is beautifully measured. This is a great author writing at the top of her form. A touching, dark, gorgeous work of fiction, and one I unhesitatingly recommend. I can't wait to read her fourth novel.
