  • Book two of Kenna and Gavin's story - Passion & Plaid - OUT NOW

If hearts are meant to be together, nothing will keep them apart...

When Gavin Macgregor first laid eyes on Kenna Moore at a festival in their Highland home, the boy fell in love with her flaming red hair, and her easy smile.

Years later, Gavin works up the courage to give Kenna a thistle, and with one innocent gesture, steals her heart.

And then, in the blink of an eye, Gavin is gone, swept away with the rest of the Highlanders to fight in Bonnie Prince Charlie's war, from which he never returns.

With Gavin's thistle around her neck, Kenna finds the strength to journey south to Edinburgh, where she's promised in marriage to Laird Ramsay Macdonald. Struggling to grow accustomed to her new life, little does Kenna know that the man who stole her heart all those years ago is waiting to do it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Action Packed Scottish Love Story March 8, 2013
By Brit
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was a perfect rainy day read. I turned the last page and stared out the window in a happy haze at the wonderful world Ms. Karin created. It was "Princess Bride" set in Scotland and I loved it.
I loved the love story of Kenna and Gavin, despite only catching glances of one another, they knew they were destined for each other and willing to fight for it.
The supporting cast of characters made me laugh and brought the world to life.
I greatly enjoyed this novel. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon- a quick read that left me feeling happy about the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic, Heroic, and Romantic! March 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I picked up Thistle and Flame without knowing a whole lot about early modern Scottish history. All I knew is that I wanted a good 18th century romance. I was pleased to find a book that drew me in with its lifelike characters and fabulous historic atmosphere.

Through Gavin, Kenna, and a host of other colorful characters, Ms. Karin brings the period to life in a way everyone can appreciate. This book hit it right on all fronts. It's romantic, historically rich, and adventurous.

The girl who finds her love years later is an old theme, but it's by no means stale. This novel is proof of that. The lovely connection between Kenna and her Highland Hero transcends time and space. The love between these two characters burns bright, but so do their individual charms. Gavin is a bold warrior with a deep devotion to his people, while Kenna has an unusually gentle heart in defeated Scotland's very harsh environment.

I was surprised to find that Thistle and Flame's villains are equally vivid. Lord Macdonald is a worthy opponent driven by his own selfish interests, and Edinburgh's Sheriff is a good symbol of English repression. Hero and heroine clash with these men as people, but also with the forces they represent: aristocracy, foreign repression, and plain old wickedness.

I appreciate the way Gavin and Kenna are drawn back together over the years too. What begins as an innocent childhood crush is made stronger by absence. When they finally meet again and plan their escape, it's in a plausible plot with a good dash of destiny thrown in. Karin uses history to her advantage to spark romance, without making it seem forced or overly contrived.

Like any good romance, there are a lot of barriers in the way of Gavin and Kenna's love, but the journey is definitely worth it! This is a great debut historical romance from this author, and I'm looking forward to more from her in the future.

It was a good short novel. A little long winded. A romance in the end! Also a little long winded at times, wish it was a true novel instead of a novella!
