Product Description

You can tell from Toby's serious expression that he means to get the job done--well. He is a small freight engine but also pulls local commuter cars. He is dark brown, with a gray bumper and skirt. Based on the award-winning television series Shining Time Station by the Reverend W. Awdry, the Thomas the Tank train system fulfills all of a child's choo-choo dreams. Each vehicle has a different name, character, and face. It is wooden and 2 inches high with black plastic wheels. The magnetic bumpers at both ends of each vehicle make linkup easy. Children will become friends with each one, developing not only imaginative play but social skills and new motor and cognitive skill as they mature. --Sandy Hirsch

Toby is a tram engine. There are a lot stories about him, like Toby sadly retired until one day Sir Tophem Hatt found that he is a very useful engine; Toby helped Mavis the little diesel out of trouble; Toby and Percy together made a kind joke at Thomas about the ghost train; etc. There is also a beautiful song about him. My three little children like him because he is very special. They often fight for the ownership. I wonder if I should buy two more of this. I do have five Thomas engines. But they still fight for the different facial expression. good toys!

While my son loves Toby, one issue with him is that with the skirt surrounding his wheels he is difficult to manuever around corners made with the 3.5 inch curved track and hills.

When my son, a Thomas fan since age 1.5, asks for a toy it is always an engine from the Thomas series. Toby is one of his favorite. Toby is a tram engine, one of the most good natured engines in the Thomas stories. While the toy does not have any interactive and fancy features, it gives my son the opportunity to relive his favorite Thomas stories.
For that reason, Toby and any of the other engines make excellent gifts to any 2+ year old.

Toby is one of the regulars on the Thomas & His Friends TV series, and this little wooden tram engine is well-made and durable for those who have the wooden railway sets.

My only complaint - and this is very minor - is that Toby is a bit taller than other wooden Thomas engines, meaning that he cannot fit under bridges very well.

Don't get me wrong, Toby is probably my son's favorite train - he asks for and plays with him several times daily. The train is very durable and withstands a lot of abuse from my almost 2 year old. My gripe is that all of our other "Thomas" trains move around the track with ease, whereas this one sticks a bit. I think the bottom part of the train (the grey portion) is a tad bit too long. Toby seems to have trouble on turns and hills. My son of course does not notice or care; this is simply my observation - which is why I still gave 5 stars.

I bought quite a few of these toys for my 2 year old for Christmas. She has recently become very infatuated with Thomas trains. The wooden make-up of these trains makes them highly durable, yet gives them the feel of good old fashion toys. It's nice having a variety so that my kid can hook the trains together with the magnets and so that there are enough to go around when her friends come over.

I think this is a nice, inexpensive toy that can give a child hours of enjoyment.

My son has had Toby for several years, and it still looks as good as the day we got it! (Despite hours and hours of playing and jostling against other trains in a drawer, mind you!)

Toby looks different from all the other engines on the Island of Sodor because he is a boxy tram engine. Although Toby is always happy to work, he can sometimes be very tempermental!

My son enjoys playing with Toby, and this train is a unique part of the Thomas and Friends collection.

We frequently read our son stories from the original the Thomas the Train collection, which provides some great background stories for each engine and how they interact with the others. Toby took the focus off of "just Thomas" for a while (as I believe he [Toby] worked Thomas's line when he [Thomas] was "getting mended at the Works"). In fact, according to our son, Annie & Clarabel like Toby better than Thomas! ;)
