I bought this item for my son, along with a small starter track, because I wasn't sure how much he'd play with it and I didn't want to spend a ton of money if it wasn't going to get much use -- any parent knows what I'm talking about!

My son loves opening/closing the gates (one gate triggers the two alternating sounds) and also pressing the button to make the sounds. There are also two red flashing lights.

Seeing how much fun he has with it, I am extremely happy that I purchased it for him.

p.s. Since I bought this I've also bought him a few other "destinations" as they are called, and I have noticed that he seems to enjoy the ones that make noise and/or have lights - not sure if that would help or not, but I just thought I'd mention it.

I bought this for my two sons as an addition to their Thomas set. They enjoy the blinking lights and sounds tremendously. It is a good addition to have but it is not what I was expecting in quality from the Thomas the Train series of toys. The loose sets we bought had a standard of high build quality and well deserving of the high price point. This was of poor construction and materials. The gates do not even align properly. The tabs to connect the rails to the crossing is made of plastic when they are usually made of solid wood. Obvious short cuts were exercised.

I bought this railroad crossing for my 3 year old son as an addition to his new Thomas table railway set, and he just LOVES it! He loves to open and close the gate and listen to the bells and watch the lights. It's a small enough piece that it doesn't take up a lot of room on the table, and he's gotten so much enjoyment from it. It seems very durable and not too expensive a piece. My 5 year old daughter also loves playing with her little brother's train table!

This railroad crossing is an excellent addition to our wooden railway. It adds another dimension to our railroad by including cars and other vehicles into the play scenario. I purchased this for my 2 year old son. He has had it now for more than 60 days and he has played with it every single day. Some other reviews mentioned that the gates do not line up perfectly and that this in some way was a problem. I too noticed that the gates do not line up perfectly but it in no way hampers play or discourages or frustrates my son. It is also nice that the signals will sound when the gates are moved or anytime you like by pressing the button. Most 2 year olds just love buttons! I would not hesitate to recommend this toy as a wonderful addition to any railway set.

Lights, sound, and gates you can move. My sons have fun using this with the wooden Thomas track, or without. Sometimes they use this to play with cars instead of the Thomas toys. Fun accessory and well crafted.

My 2.5yo son enjoys the sounds and lights of this toy and we have encouraged him to incorporate his cars into the set to take advantage of the crossing feature. For that reason, I think it fosters creativity and expands the possibilities for the Thomas set. Neither gate aligns properly as another review notes but it doesn't effect the usefulness of the toy. The crossing has also taught my son the usefulness of a screwdriver and how to replace batteries because we have to replace them (2 AAA) every week. This is not an exaggeration. We might be changing them more frequently! Even if he were activating the electronics excessively, I would not expect to change the batteries this often. Consider this cost when purchasing.

I bought this for my now 2 1/2 year old nephew 10 months ago. While I've gradually added numerous extras to the train set this remains his favorite. The blinking lights, realistic railroad crossing sounds and the movable gates add to the fun. Cars, farm animals, construction vehicles, etc. all have to wait for the train to pass and the gates to open before they can cross. And, sometimes it's the train that has to wait at a closed gate for Sir Topham Hat or the horse to cross before the gate opens to allow the train to continue on its way. If you have a basic Thomas set and are looking for just one piece to add, I'd recommend this one!

My son is just 2 and enjoys playing with his train set -- Melissa and Doug table and tracks but a mix of trains and cars that go on the tracks at this point. We saw this additional piece in ToysRUS and he loved playing with it on their model but they didn't sell it separately, so we looked on Amazon and we were happy to be able to buy it alone without more tracks etc. My son loves it -- opening and closing the gates and pushing the button to make the sound of a train approaching.
