4.0 out of 5 stars Good text for self-study
I've used this text to teach myself calculus, basically reading the text cover-to-cover and doing about half the exercises. I've found it fairly easy going - the text is well written and contains enough worked examples that you can do most exercises without too much trouble. I would advise against spending money on the Student's Solution Manuals (Sharf/Weir) though -...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very few problems worked out step by step.
This text is filled with complex, overly theoretical, long winded explanations that fill paragraph after paragraph of each page. The real shame with this book is the utter lack of throughly worked through problems. The solution manual is nothing more than an answer book containing at most three steps. C'mon
when was the last time taking the derivative of a complex...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Calculus Book Ever, September 6, 2002
By
This review is from: Thomas' Calculus (10th Edition) (Hardcover)
This book is the best calculus book I ever had in my possession. It is very detailed and it also gives you lots of examples. There are also a lot of problems that you can work on for practice followed by the odd answers at the back of the book. This book can take you from calculus I & II to Multivariable Calculus. I think that this book should be recommended to anyone taking calculus in college.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be the standard Calculus textbook., August 29, 2001

This review is from: Thomas' Calculus (10th Edition) (Hardcover)
In comparison of books currently used at universities, Thomas' Calculus is by far the most comprehensible. I have continually refered to Thomas more so than the instructors or the 'required' book for the course. Thomas explains ideas far better and using a language that is geared toward the learner. If you are not mathematically inclined, this book will be a great benefit.

when was the last time taking the derivative of a complex equation containing trig functions took two steps. Give students a break. The energy put forth creating the complex explanations could have been better spent showing problems completely worked through. If you learn by seeing how to do a problem step by step dont even consider this text.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes too verbose, sometimes too concise..., December 11, 2002

I have just completed a semester using the 10th Edition of this textbook. While my math instructor was excellent at giving useful information, I cannot say the same about the book. As other reviewers have said, the book may stray off course at times and expound upon things that have nothing to do with helping a bored Calculus student with his or her mission: to complete the homework problems. The small number of relevant examples that the book does have do not accomplish their goal of helping the student to solve the often much more complex problems in the chapters.

Please heed my advice and actually take notes from your math lecturer if you are forced to use this textbook. You will no doubt get a headache while trying to assimilate the information presented by the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars For a 5 Star Calculus book read this Review, October 9, 2002
This review is from: Thomas' Calculus (10th Edition) (Hardcover)
As a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from WSU this book was not the text of choice, but a second runner up--The College of Mathematics chose C. Henry Edwards & David E. Penney's text on Calculus.

Calculus, 6E, by Prentice Hall, ISBN: 0-13-092071-1 has been the only course text for Math 171(Calculus I), Math 172(Calculus II) and Math 273(Calculus III) since the late 1980s.

Calculus is a strange but wonderful form of Art that when the "lightbulb clicks to ON" and luckily both texts but moreso Penney's work in arrangement and examples really gives one a full insight into the vastness of Calculus.

Sample chapters are available from Prentice Hall.

My 7th Edition of Thomas/Finney is actually being used as I am retooling my skills in Calculus by going through and solving the courseware, one problem at a time. The next test will be picking up the 6th Edition of Penney's masterpiece--it has kept up with the times and I sold back mine to get some much need cash during my University days.

Object Oriented Programming is a lot like Calculus. Once the "lightbulb goes to ON" you truly can conduct it.
