3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent, Yet Short Compilation, March 21, 2000
This review is from: The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture (Audio CD)
The Thomas Crown Affair Soundtrack (1999) has some true musical highlights including the obvious Sting version of "Windmills of Your Mind," which was a remake of a song found in the original movie. Another highlights include George Cordandt's "Caban..." and Bill Conti's piano theme found on tracks 5, 6, 8, and 9. The main drawback to this cd is it's short length. There are quite a number of songs missing from the film including the music of the heist, as well as the big band number from the dance sequence between Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. Still a good album, and worth a buy from any fan of the film.

I have seen the movie many times and think its a great suspense/caper/romance movie. Actually, its a little bit of all that. the soundtrack fits the movie well. The songs from Sting and Nina Simone are excellent. And Bill Conti's jazz-style score ranges from the plinky piano tunes of the two "Glider" tracks to the smooth jazz lounge feel of "Cocktails". The only problem I had with this otherwise exceptional soundtrack was the lack of the theft sequence music. Although it was more rock than the rest of the score, the theft sequence theme would have rounded off this CD perfectly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing Music!, March 6, 2000
By
This review is from: The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture (Audio CD)
There are 3 major songs MISSING from the CD. The first was played during the breaking out of the horse at the beginning. The second was during the hot dance scene and the major mistake was not including the music from the love scene following the hot dance scene. Maybe a second CD is coming - we can only hope. Meanwhile - does anyone have any info on the songs above? Artist's name? Anything? Otherwise what music that is on the CD is quite good but - geez I hope that the missing songs surface somehow.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ticked about the lack of stuff here, August 8, 2000
By
japhmi "John H" (Hillsboro, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture (Audio CD)
The whole problem with the Soundtrack is that the "nice" stuff, the stuff that made the movie feel "ritzy" and glamourous, the jazz and the piano, the Sting soundtrack and the rest of the stuff is here. But the music that rounded out the whole movie itself, such as the song from the lovemaking scene between Russo and Brosnson, is NOT here. The music from the original heist is not here. Hell, half the music from the whole thing isn't here. Which makes this, while a nice CD to listen to, NOT what I'd even want to buy. I listened to it, I returned it to the rack, and I walked out. I wouldn't buy it, and MGM better start figuring out the amount of space that a CD actually has, and what is DECENT music to listen to, and what is not.

Welcome to the digital world, RIAA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings the Film Back Every Time, January 5, 2000

If you haven't yet seen this smart, sexy, funny thrill ride of a movie yet, SEE IT! And if you have, and you loved it as much as I did, get the soundtrack! While watching the film, I kept thinking, "this music is fantastic! I hope there's a soundtrack!" And I was not disappointed when I purchased the CD. All of the great music from the film is here, including the sensuous "Everything" from Wasis Diop, Nina Simone's "Sinnerman," with it's charging rhythms, the remake of "Windmills..." by Sting, and Bill Conti's understated, intelligent score, which would be considered fine music even on its own. Who would have thought that a soundtrack could so completely compliment a wonderful film?

4.0 out of 5 stars A Few Songs...Are Never Quite Enough, February 29, 2000
This review is from: The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture (Audio CD)
There are very few things keeping this from being a 5-star review. The music selected evokes incredibly accurately the wide range of emotions instilled by the film. The quality of the music is perfect. Listener might leave wondering, however, *why* the album's producers left out the beautiful tracks that they did.

The album includes obviously good selections, such as the sexy and haunting version of "The Windmills of Your Mind" by Sting, the sensual and wistful "Everything...(Is Never Quite Enough)" by Wasis Diop, the powerful and energetic "Sinnerman" by the great Nina Simone and the festive "Caban La Ka Kratchie" by Georges Fordat. An equally obvious series of selections are the (too) short tracks from Bill Conti's beautiful and emotionally wide-ranging original score.

But what about the great suspenseful and action-packed instrumental score played during the film's opening theft sequence? What about the several beautiful versions of "The Windmills of Your Mind," including the sexy big band version during the BVLGARI black and white ball? And what about the hot Latin number during the same scene? The album seems perfect in what it has, but incredibly off-base in what it lacks.

It remains a beautiful album. Buy it anyway...and keep Sting, Wasis Diop, and Bill Conti on "repeat," but hope we one day see more of what was missing from this album in its equally beautiful sister, *More Music from The Thomas Crown Affair*....

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good cd : but somewhat of a dissapointment, October 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I love the movie. I thought that the movie was the best adult movie of the summer by far. The music in the movie was awesome. When i sawe the cd i had to buy it. The Sting version of Windmill of your mind is very good and one of the best tracks is Nina Simone's Sinnerman is excellent it's jazzy tune is actually quite soothing. Now on to the score from Bill Conti is excellent the piano tunes to the jazz tunes he blends them seemlessly but what makes this cd a dissapointment i was expecting more of the score from Bill conti because they left out the tango music and the robbery music which was very cool also whay is it so short i wish the score had been more than 1:30 mins long maybe like. I don't know maybe like more than 2 mins or more. Lets hopr that they release a special edition with more of the score from the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nina Simone and Sting (among others) - jazzy and sexy!, January 22, 2005

Ah...now THIS is music for sharing with a lover or for enjoying while sinking back in that perfect easy chair- perhaps as you watch the snow fall or the rain come down. The CD will simply sweep you away.
I particularly loved listening to Simone's version of Sinner Man as well as Sting singing "Windmills of Your Mind". Dreamy, sensual and absolutely delicious. If you are feeling more than a tad stressed out, this one should get you back on track.
SIDE NOTE: Do try to get hold of Felix Da House Cat's remix of Sinner Man (the version used in an otherwise forgettable film called Cellular). It, too, is a standout and a good intro to another good artist/remixer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where's Bill Conti?, December 28, 2005

Yes, yes, you get to hear Sting doing an adequate cover of the famous song from the original movie, but I can hear Sting doing adequate covers any time. What drove me to want the CD was to hear more of Conti's driving score and to hear it alone without the movie -- which is very well done. You get about a minute and a half of 5 pieces here. It's hardly worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is an EXPANDED edition of this CD, December 15, 2002
This review is from: The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I didn't know this version existed. It was in limited release some time after the movie's release. This is a hot movie and the music is even hotter. Just happened to be on eBay and checking for this occasionally. I discovered that there is an expanded edition. It was a limited release but the cd contains music that is over 60 minutes long. I've got the DVD but always love rewinding to my favorite parts just to hear the music.
