Samuel A Humphrey has been making furniture for fun all his life. A Navy engineer, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina and rediredted his hobby to researching the work of Thomas Elfe, a local eighteenth century cabinetmaker. Tracking down many pieces in musuems and private homes, preparing measured drawings, studing Charleston history and poring over archival records resulted in this book and a new, reproduction breakfast table in the author's home.

If you are a fan of Charleston furniture, and Elfe in particular, this book is invaluable. There is enough interesting history to make it a good read. There are photos and drawuings of many fine pieces. If you are into reproductions, this is a goldmine. Author Samuel Humphrey did all of us furniture fans a real favor by writing this book.
