This book is a classic. It contains the exceptional stories Thomas and Gordon, Thomas' Train, Thomas and the trucks and Thomas and the breakdown train. In the first story, the little blue engine gets carried away with himself and gets a run for his money from Gordon. In the next, Henry is ill so Thomas takes his passenger train with embarrasing results. In the one after, Thomas has a go with some troublesome trucks. Finally, while he is shunting, Thomas notices James having some trouble with some trucks, he gets a hold of the breakdown train and saves James and gets a Branch line of his very own with two coaches.

I was disappointed to find that these are not the stories as originally published (as they seem to purport to be). Changes have been made in the text to match the changes for the U.S. television series ("trucks" to "freight cars", Sir Topham Hatt, etc.) It is very frustrating when publishers feel they need to change something that was so great to begin with. The original illustrations are here and are great, but I'd suggest finding an older copy of the book or a collection with the author's original text if you are really interested in the Thomas stories as they were originally published.

We just thought it was so ironic that Thomas - the little #1 blue train who spawned such a phenomenon - didn't show up in The Railway Series until the second book! We appreciate the old-fashioned feel of these books,as well as their diminutive size (@ 4 1/2"h x 5 3/4"w) - perfect for smaller hands. In this one, we finally meet Thomas for the first time, as well as James, Annie & Clarabel, and Edward, Gordon, Henry and Sir Topham Hatt (referred to as "The Fat Director") are back. The book is four stories within one book (Thomas and Gordon / Thomas's Train / Thomas and the Trucks / Thomas and the Breakdown Train). It was first published in 1946, and this edition was first published in 1996. Our older grandson was about 2 1/2 when he became completely infatuated with Thomas, which led Grandpa and I to beginning our first collections for him... trains, annuals, but - first and foremost - The Railway Series!

There are 42 books in the series, the first 26 written by the Rev. W. Awdry, with the remaining 16 written by his son, Christopher (for whom the books were begun in the first place! And the forward in this book is very sweet: "Dear Christopher, Here is your friend Thomas, the Tank Engine. He wanted to come out of his station-yard and see the world. These stories tell you how he did it. I hope you will like them because you helped me to make them. Your Loving Daddy") Our older grandson (almost 6 now) still enjoys his collections, but his younger brother (closing in on 2) is already showing strong interest - with another grandchild due in September, the Thomas collections have been a great investment for us.

If you're not looking to start a collection, read no further, but if you think you'd like to, we'll save you the trouble of looking up all of the titles.

Nice books, not quite what I had hoped for. I was hoping for a little bit of a story line to go with them, but instead its simply stated. Such as in the color book, if they are showing blue engines, the page says Blue. In the shape book, if the page is showing square items, the page says Square. No story to go with it. My son lost interest in them pretty quick.

I love that this is the original oldy-timey version of the Thomas stories. My son loves the illustrations. The size is easy to handle. There are about 3-4 stories per book.
