This is our third copy of this book. My children have literally loved this book to shreds. Even before children can speak words, they love to learn the sounds of animals -- especially easily identifiable farm animals. 3.0 out of 5 stars Thomas and the Freight Train (A Chunky Book(R))
I thought the book was larger for some reason. It was only about 2 or 3 inches in width and length. It was a xmas present for my nephew so I was a little disappointed it was so small.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever, zany illustration enhances an already popular theme, April 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Thomas and the Freight Train (Thomas & Friends) (A Chunky Book(R)) (Board book)
Thomas the Train has delighted babies and toddlers for years. But the real treasure is the zany illustrations and attention to detail that illustrator Owain Bell creates in his world. The illustrations are a source of humor for children and adults... but you must take care to point this out to your child. Trains ride by men falling from ladders, grandma's snoring in the back of cars, and all under the guise of "Mr. Topham" who is modeled after the Vanderbuilts. I love this book, it just keeps on going.

This book is the perfect size for little hands and is wonderful to take along on trips because it doesn't take up too much space. My 2 year old son loves this book because it incorporates Thomas and animals, two of his favorite things.

I bought this book for my 15 month old cousin. He loved the book and wanted me to read it to him over and over again. Just looking at the book made him smile! This is a good little book for babies.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book! But too simple for my 2 year old, January 11, 2007

I didn't introduce Thomas to my son until he is about 2.5 year old. I bought this board book thinking it will be good for him to read by himself. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the description of the book. It was smaller than I expected. My son liked it okay but it is not his favorite Thomas book. I think it is a bit too easy for him. I will think this book is probably more suitable for readers a little bit younger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really a "baby" book, but Devon still liked it..., January 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thomas and the Freight Train (Thomas & Friends) (A Chunky Book(R)) (Board book)
There was nothing in the Amazon description to indicate the size of Thomas and the Freight Train (Thomas and Friends) (A Chunky Book(R)), so I, like many other customers, assumed it was a normal-sized book... The word "chunky" in the title doesn't tell much; it indicates, to me, the thickness but not the size, so ...

What a surprise when Amazon delivered it and Devon's Mom, Mikki, called to tell me it's only about three-inches square and is a cardboard book.

I felt bad about that, thinking I should have sent it to one-and-a-half-year-old Melissa instead, but Mikki told me Devon loves it because he can stick it in his pocket. In fact, he did just that and took it to pre-school with him today. She said even she was shocked that he likes it so much that he asked her to read it four or five times right off the bat! Now, he has it memorized and is going around quoting it and telling his friends, "Look what my Grammy sent me." (I guess it helps that he's going through a train stage.)

It's actually only about eight pages in length; that's probably why Devon could memorize it so quickly.

Even though Devon (at age four) reacted this way to it and the description says it's for "babies through preschool," I still would not recommend it for any child past three. Devon is that exceptional, good-natured child who likes almost everything, so it works for him...much to my relief. He also loves "pretty pictures," so the colorful illustrations probably played a great role in his liking it.

I hope this information helps you make up your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for fidgety toddlers, October 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thomas and the Freight Train (Thomas & Friends) (A Chunky Book(R)) (Board book)
I love that each page only has a few words so we can flip through the pages quickly and still get the whole story. My 3 year old son and one year old daughter fight over this one because it is so fun to carry around and play with the scalloped edges. The 3 year old calls it his Thomas Chunky book. We actually had a copy of it and I accidentally washed it with the my sons bedsheets (he loved to sleep with it.) I hoped that he would be satisfied with a different new Thomas book, but he never forgot about it so we were delighted to find a copy on Amazon.
