Did your child see the Thomas movie twelve times or more?,

If he did, this toy will definately be worth the money. My son is now 4 1/2 and we are knee deep in a Thomas obsession. He actively plays with his engines on a daily basis, most particularly this one. Diesel 10 is evil and threatening with the claw he calls "pinchy." The only complaint I have about this toy is that the claw doesn't open. However, I'm sure there would be safety issues with something that small, so it is understandable. But if your child enjoys acting out the Thomas stories, this is a great buy.

The claw is the main attraction of Diesel 10. In this toy it only slides forward and back - there is no up or down movement and the claw jaws do not open and close. This is a huge drawback because that's why the kids love Diesel 10. My 3 year old plays with it, but not to the extent he would be if it could do more. Remember, this toy is only a few inches long. It fit the track system, but I think my son would have been happier with a different character - it was VERY anticlimactic to have a non-functioning claw.

I've Got To Agree On the Claw,

We also have a Thomas fanatic in our home and while we've been watching all the video/dvd's for months, I held out on the movie because someone told me it was terrible. (PS: It's pretty terrible, but your Thomas fan will love it so be prepared to watch it 100's of times ughh). Where was I, oh yeah...my son LOVES the Thomas movie and LOVES Diesel and Lady so I ordered both for his birthday. He was so excited when he opened his present and realized it was Diesel, however that quickly turned to concern when the first thing out of his mouth was "Mom, he's broken, the claw doesn't bite or move up and down".
I don't know why LC designed Diesel this way since the fact that Diesel's claw can move up and down and bite is such a HUGE part of the Thomas movie. Regardless my son took him quickly to the Island of Sodor (his train table) and played with him for the rest of the night. He wouldn't trade Diesel in for anything, but Diesel won't get 5 stars because I think his designer made a boo-boo by not making him more true to his character in the movie. Diesel (and Lady) is still an important edition to your train set though if your little one is a fan of the Thomas movie.

Diesel 10's Pinchy is disappointing,

The kids were excited to get Diesel 10, but Pinchy only slides back and forth. In Thomas and the Magic Railroad movie, Pinchy moves up and down and opens and closes. It would not be safe for a toy to open and close to actually "pinch," but it should move more realistically. I am surprised, however, that the kids have not cracked off Pinchy (though it is slightly bent), since it doesn't move up and down, so it is quite durable.

My 3 year old son got to sit with 3 Santas this year, and when each one asked what he wanted for Christmas, he said, "Diesel 10!" That's all we've heard for the last four months or so since he saw Day of the Diesels. In Day of the Diesels, which he has probably watched 50 times by now, Diesel 10 is very smarmy. He pretends to be Percy's friend to trick Percy into helping the diesels, who need a new Diesel Works. In the end, Thomas and friends stop Diesel 10 and a very cross Sir Topham Hatt comes along to tell Diesel 10 that he's an engine on HIS railroad (and he's in trouble!). He ends up getting what he wants though - a new Diesel Works is built after some sparks from his pinching claw cause the old Diesel Works to be gutted by fire. But he's different from the very wicked Diesel 10 in Magic Railroad. In that, he's a wise-cracking, claw-pinching, nasty diesel engine! He calls his claw "Pinchy" and even talks to it - when chasing Thomas and Lady he says, "Pinchy, duck!" when he goes in a tunnel. Also during that chase, he cracks, "Pinchy is hungry! I like my food STEAMED!" (as in steam engine like Thomas). He cracks me up. But he is on the malicious side in Magic Railroad and has much better henchmen. Diesel 10's facial expression on this wooden engine is great. He's large and solid, with a plastic pinchy. Pinchy doesn't open or shut and only moves forward and backwards, not up. My son's favorite Diesel 10 sequence is the chase that I mentioned, where Lady and Thomas make it across a bridge, but then a section of the bridge collapses, leaving dangling track. Diesel 10 starts to fall through, but catches on to one of the wooden ties on the tracks with Pinchy. The tie cracks and Diesel 10 falls and falls...and lands on a river barge (and cracks a joke about taking a cruise). My son can do a lot of it, but I wish Pinchy were just a little more mobile so that he could really have some fun. All in all, he's a fun bad guy and a good foil for Thomas.

Despite the fact that, this is a conspirator, an ill-willed, lying, unreliable character, if your child is a Thomas fanatic, s/he will be very happy to watch Day of the Diesels while holding this toy in her little hand. For some reason, children loved the Diesel 10 character just like they liked the arrogant and snob Spencer character when Hero of the Rails was out. The claw is not functional but I see that as a plus. A bit expensive as it is a hot topic now, but was worth the price to see my daughter with that kind of smile when we gave it to her.

For a wooden railway train, this is a great toy. There were comments about the claw at the top of Diesel 10 being a disappointment. Personally I do not think it is a problem. I would be worried if it moved any more that sliding back and forth, it would be a safety issue. My 3 year old son asked for Diesel 10 everyday up to his birthday. Ever since he opened the package Diesel 10 came in, he has played with the train everyday. A great addition to our Thomas and Friends collection.

This version of Diesel 10 looks great and is correct in scale as being the biggest engine. The only disappointment is that his scooper arm only slides back and forth; it does not have the full range of motion that you see the character use in the films. For this reason, I am expecting it to be broken when played with. The train itself swivels slightly on its wheels, but not enough to mimic that full range of motion. Still, it's a nice addition and his face is very true to the character's.

After my son got this for Christmas, everytime someone asked him "how was your Christmas" he would just reply with "I got Diesel 10!" He loves Diesel 10 and this is an excellent addition to any Thomas collection. As always the toy is durable. My son loves having Diesel 10 to chase around the other engines. The only this that is disappointing is the lack of movement of the claw. I knew that the claw wouldn't move when I ordered it, and seeing the size of the trains, I think it would mean that the claw was not very durable because it would be so small, but it would be nice to have some motion other than just back and forth. We are happy with this train because we knew what it would be like when it arrived but if you child wants a moving claw, they may be disappointed.
