5.0 out of 5 stars Our First Set for Wooden Tracks, December 9, 2008
By
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway - Mountain Overpass Set (Now with James) (Toy)
This is the set we began with when our children became interested in playing with the Wooden Train Tracks. This is a great set. There are enough pieces that you can do creative things with it (a circle and an oval, a hill over a circle etc).

The pieces are very sturdy and have held up to three children and who knows how many friends playing with the pieces. The mountain is big. Bigger than you might think based on the pictures.

What makes this set so good is that the mountain holds up the hill pieces. With out the hill you would need to get some blocks or something to hold up the hill pieces. For little hands this becomes difficult and if they bump the tracks then everything falls apart. The mountain doesn't present the same difficulties for little fingers and hands.

As one reviewer noted, it does work better on a hard surface. It doesn't have to be a table though, a nice hard floor works great too. However, my children set it up on carpeting and generally don't complain about derailings.

This is well worth the money.
Enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Attractive, Expensive, Disappointing Quality, November 29, 2005
This review is from: Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway - Mountain Overpass Set (Now with James) (Toy)
We have had this train set for almost a year now. The reason I give it such a low rating is because it is so overpriced for the quality.
My son loves to play with the Thomas Trains (not the tracks). The tracks don't fit together well. They look odd and slanted, and fit together only loosely. When the train comes down the mountain, it sometimes hits one of the track pieces sticking up and then derails.
When I spoke to the toy store about it, they said all tracks in this set are the same, and that the problem with the track derailing can be avoided by putting the tracks on a Thomas Train Table.
We have carpeting in our house, so I guess this is bumpier, but I didn't appreciate hearing that an $80.00 train set only works well if I buy a $250.00 matching train table! For this expensive price you would really expect good workmanship.
My son also has the Fisher Price Geo Trax set and we are much happier with that than with the Thomas Set. It costs half the price, and you can often find it on sale. It doesn't look as pretty and classic as a wooden train set, but it works much better.
