Quintessential Hardy,
At its best, Victorian literature is about the cost of breaking the rules, and perhaps more important, the cost of not breaking the rules. In this handsome volume, which includes airy pages, larger-than-average type, and an abundance of engravings to illustrate the text, Hardy examines this central theme through the course of nine short stories drawn from "A Group of Noble Dames" (1891) and "Life's Little Ironies" (1894). All the tales found herein are true page-turners; some are quite short, many are typically tragic, and a few even have a happy ending!
