Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: 98p. photogs. reprods. chron. index. (Encyclopedia of Presidents Series). CIP. Childrens. 1986. PLB $10.95. Grade 4-6 This series of presidential biographies is most welcome. Although the text is brief, it is clear and covers the lives of these men from birth through family life, education, public life, presidency, and retirement. Although the authors generally view their subjects favorably, they also show their failings and problems. Details and quotations make the men seem real; they are not idealized. Prints and photos in black and white on nearly every page add further dimension to the presidents and their times. Personal and historical backgrounds set each man into perspective; contributions and viewpoints of each toward the Constitution are discussed at length. Most juvenile biographies of these presidents date from the 1960s and have formats which lack visual appeal; many are fictionalized and few are targeted for this grade level. Four very useful biographies. Nancy Kewish, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland
